We are giad to see that there are some di- vines in the country who seem to have a real- izing sense that their mission on earth is to preach the gospel pure and undefiled, and disseminate its benign precepts of peace and | charity, rather than to encourage dissension | by political barangues from the pulpit. How- | ard Crosby, D D., preached a yery able ser- | mon Tuesday night in New York city, before | the New York and New Jersey Synod, upon the abuses of preaching. 1t was, we are told, | & masterly rebuke of the sins of the pulpit, and of political preaching especially. | It may be going too far to say, as some do, that our late civil war was precipitated by church divisions on political questions; but no | close observer can dispute the fact that mach of the bitterness which characterized the strife, | and many of the cruelist and most uncharita- | bie actions on either side, were the direct re- | sults of political preaching. One of the great | causes of the success and growing prosperity of the Catholi. church in this country is the fact that while thatsect has been the object or party action in this country, it has never, as a chureh, interfered with American politics With them, as with the Protestant Episcopal denomination, there is no “Church North” and | «Cbureb Sonth,” but while the members hold diverse views upon political topics, in the | church they areas one man. Let other sects follow this example, and in this country, at | jeast, let us have practically what we now | beld only theoretically, “no union of Church | and State.” ro cD cs THE FALL ELECTIONS. The next State election to take place is that | of West Virginia, Oct. 25th, for Governor, three members of Congress and Legislature. We are glad to know that there is now good Prospect for ‘he establishment of a permaneny line of steamers betweea the District cities and New York. Satisfactory preliminary negotia- tions for a basis of action have been made be- tween prominent business men of New Y and the MDistrict cities, and the proper steps entered upon fcr pushing forward the project, | The parties here concerned in the enterprise have stipulated that the management shall be in District hands, which has been agreed to by the New York parties on condition that a ma- Jority of the stock, or $50,000, shall be subscribed here. This done, it is stipulated that the ma- jority of tbe Board of Directors, and also the off.ces of President and Treasurer, shall be con- trolled by the stockholders of the District, The capitalis to be $150,000; the sbares $1¢3 each. The principal bankers of this city have alltaken an inverest in the enterprise, and a canvass of two hours’ times by jone- of oar active business men has secured a subscription of $30,000. It needs now nothing but a little united effort vpon the part of the business men ef the District to make tl e success or the enter- prise an assured thing. It is a burning disgrace that a community of 120,000 inhabitants has no steamer communication with New York, save by canal boats, liable to interrnption three months of the year. With the management of the affair confided to our own business men, the merchants and shippers of the District may count upon having a proper degree of accom. modation afforded them: such as they haye felt the need of heretofore. In every way the enter- prise must prove advantageous to the people of this District. and has a paramount claim upon them for support. THE WHITE HOUSE. Among those who had interviews with the President to-day were Secretaries Stanton and McCulloch. There was the usual large attend- ance of visitors. among whom we noticed Sen. ator Cowan and Hon. Samuel Randall. APPOINTMENT BY THE PRESIDENT. The President to-day appointed Samuel H Jones to be Marshal forthe Western District of Tennessee. AFFAIRS IN TENNESSEE, Brevet Brigadier General J. R Lewis, As- sistant Commissioner for the Freedmen’s Bu- reau for the State of Kentucky, has transmit- ted to Gea. Howard a report of the operations of the Bureau in that State for the quarter ending September 30th. Gen. Lewis reports that during July, August, and September 5,064 rations were issued to 2Si refugees and freed- men, at a cost of $954. The number of rations issued in September was much larger than usual, in order to relieve the suffering caused by the cholera then prevailing. It is believed tuat bere will be sufficient harvest in the State to supply the wants of ali; but in the towns there is & transient population of freedmen who have no interest in the crops, who have Dut litte claim upon the local authorities, and who. if overtaken by sickness in the coming winter, must suffer much destitution. Highty- one schools for freedmen are in operation, having an attendance of 4.26) upils. There have been no hospitals or dispensaries in- stututed under the auspices of the Bureau during the quarter, the efforts of the Bureau agents having been directed towards securing for the freedmen the equal benefit of such aid as is rendered to whites. Neither the civil au- thorities nor private benevolence have done much for the destitute sick, except at Memphis, where, under an arrangement between the civil gathorities and Gen. Fisk, much good has been done in this respect. The Dospital tor freedmen, which was putin the charge of the civil authorities, bas been well conducted, At @ cost to them of over $4,000 per month. At the last session of the county court the author- ities appropriated $25.(.00 for the support of the poor, irrespective of color. P ENT OF INTEENAL VEN APPOINTM: Omi BEVENUE The following appointments of internal rey- enue officers for the State of Tennessee haye been made :—Elijah Simmerly, Collector for the first district, Joseph H.
