At balf-past seven o'clock the preliminaries were srranged forthe ¢rawing. He alluded to the articles mm the Star with reference to the scheme ss having had a damaging effect upon the saie of tickets in this city, and attributed the oppo- sition of the journal to the fact that it bad not been given advertising patronage. Seep Youxe Mps’s Ouxistian Assovlarion.— The first regular meeting of the board of direc. tors of the Young Men's (bristian Asseciation building was held at the office of Jay Cooke & Co.. Uctober 10, The followimg-named prominent citizens ‘were elected members of the board to moe folly resent the business interests of the city ’—Messrs. John R. Elvans and Samuei Norment. Messrs. Alex. R Shepherd and Lewis Cle- phane were elected directors to represent the interests of the Washington Library Associ- ation. The board elected the following officers :— President, Hon. S. P. Ohase, Onief Justice of ibe Supreme Court; Secretary, Brevet Brig. General 5. L. Brown; Treasurer, H. D. Cooke, Esq. The buiiding committee was increased b the addition of Messrs. Alex. R. Shepherd, ef | R. Elvans, and Wm. B. Todd. The bosrd authorized the issae of one hun- dred thousand dollars ($100,000) worth of stock am shares of $25 each. The Young Men’s Christian Association subscribed the sum of $25,000 toward the erec- ton of the building. and bas granted an an- nual dividend of six per cent. apon all stock, ‘which renders investment in the building fund not only safe but remunerative. The project of erecting a building to contain 2 commodious public ball, a large free library and reading rooms. parlors, and gymnasium, meets with hearty favor among all classes of | citizens.
