Official statements recently prepared show that our people in utter disregard ot the warn- Ings of the past, are indulging in the same Tuinous extravagance which on previous oc- casions bas resulted in financial disaster and | ruin. Thus our imports at the present time | are mote than double the value of exports, and for the heavy balance against us our bonds are being shipped to Europe in lieu of gold ata discount of 25 to 30 per cent. Such a state of things cannot long continue without bringing a day of reckoning. That it.may be seen for what Juxuries we are incurring this great risk, | ‘we may mention that in the four and a half millions of imports received at New York in the first week of this month there are included = 9 for jewelry: 269097 for fancy goods, $21,157 tor champagne; $2,659 for cigars; $33,157 | for toys: £6,621 for perfumery; $61,397 for Wines, and $19,658 for brandy. Our resources are almost unlimited, and our | recuperative powers wonderful; but they | W should be devoted exclusively to payment of | the National debt. When that task is finished | we can betier afford to indulge ourselves | However, while money, so-called, is plentiful we bave no idea that ary moralizing, however well intended, will prevent people from buy- ing what they want, and can pay for. Let | them bear in mind, however, that the future is very uncertain, and in case of genera! commer- | cial disaster, precipitated by recklessness, the Weightiest purses will be somewhat lightened. | APPOINTED. He is ® vigorous and digei- | fled writer, and his contributions to the maga. | zipes and to the editorial columns of the Na- ional Intelligencer, have attracted much atten- | tion. ----Johh R. S87” A large Republican caucus was held in | Malden, Mase., on Saturday evening, for the | election of delegates to attend the Sixth Dis- trict Convention for the nomination of a can- didate for Congress. This district was repre- sented last year by Gen. Banks. George W- Copeland in the caucus said thathe was op. posed to the re-nomination of Banks, because his character morally was not creditanie to the district. He said that Banks bad been in a condition of shamelers intoxication in Port- jand, and that he would be very glad if the I would deny the fact in his presence. Gen. Banks was immedi by his beard the state- ment. made by whom it may be. was an atro- cious, wanton and infamous falsehood. Mr. Copeland answered that if Gen. Banks denied the statement he attered a deliberate falsehood. He diselaimed having any personal animosity towards the General. Tbe GeneraPsaid he did not care whether be bad any ornot. Mr. Uope- Jand then said be could satisfy any gendeman who would go to Portiand and investigate the case. This concluded the dialogue and the business of the caucus went on. The chances are that Banks will be re-nominated. The superb three-story | 10,000 house on “Second street, near E,” had ble eir grand promises to Their 300,000 seld-tickets had vanished from the programme; as had thetwo | “two-story houses on Tenth street, between M and N;” the “fine city lots on Seventh street north,” the “splendid ($4,000) carriage, horses and harness complete,” &c., &c., all had van- ished like “the baseless fabric of a dream.” } The $25,000 to be given to the Soldiers’ and Sailors’ National Orphan Home Fund bad shrank to $5.00, and the grand gifts to other charitable objects to the most infinitesimal, 325 proportions. The “One Present to every | Four Tickets” bad been dilated to one in every seventeen, and so on through the entire Grand Programme.” Amongst the causes given by Manager Morse for the failure of ils lottery concern to fulfilits promises was the opposition of the Star, and he was so charitable as tosug- gest thatthe cause of the Sfar’s course im re gard to bis lottery was the failure of the man- agers to advertise in it, We have branded a similar fasschood by this man Morse in appro- priate terms, and have now only to add that ‘tis but @ specimen brick of the whole struc- ture of falsehood, humbug, and deceit upon which thetr speculation was sustained. The Star, though having little faith in the soand- hess of the coucern, refrained, through unwil- lingness to throw cold water upon an enter- prise ostenstbly for the aid of benevolent pur- poses, from giving utterance to that wapt of faith until after the postponement of the draw- mg until October 1ith, which act was accom- panied and followed by other breaches of faith towards the ticket holders, making it impera- live on any paper deserving the respect of tue public, to call the managers to account for their derilections, The ticket holders may thank the Star for the fact that the drawing has been carried ont in a shape to give them any show whatever. It was the Sfar,as the managers admit: in their advertisements, that compelled them by its «timely suggestions” to throw proper guards about the drawing, for the protection of the ticket holders, by &ppomting responsible com- Tittees from the Departments, and among the citizens to superintend the drawing, and see personally that the duplicates of positively sold tickets, and only those, went into the box. The committees thus appointed at the Star’s suggestions seem to have performed their duty faithfully, using their utmost exertionsto protect the right ot the ticket-holders. To the Star is due the fact that the leading prizes were not shuffled out of the drawing altogether, They haye not dared to deny our allegation that they advertised all these houses and lots as in their possession, (asking directions how to forward title deeds!) when they had just as much ownership im them as Satan had in the extensive stretch of real estate Le once upon’a time offered as a Gilt consideration! The lega; negovations for the possession of the leadiag prize were not entered upon by them until yesterday, and then only under the pressure of the Star's exposures. This they cannot deny. We may say here that the reason that they did pot advertise in the Siar was because they could not buy the editorial endorsement ot the Star as they did with such facility in some oth- er papers. That they made a mistake in not advertising in @ paper of the Star's circulation was, probably, & misiake on their part, bat that was their own Jookout. It certainly did ‘not effect oar action towards them, as shown by the fact already stated, that we retrained. from giving voice to the current feeling of doubt in regard to their project untilhsometime atrer the expiration or the time fixed for the drawing. The fartner fact might be mentioned, that the adv. with which they subsequently favored us did not cause us te abandon our line of criticism upon their course. But enough of ali this- They fatled simply because the affair was not managed in a way to secure public confidence. We have heretofore pointed out the inherent defects of such & scheme, and the impossibility of earrying it out; and when a scheme of this colossal character was undertaken by indi- viduals of whom the public at large knew nothing whatever, and who failed to give a single gaarantee of good faith, the failure of the project was aseured. If we are to credit the statements of Mr. Moree as to the items of expenditure, no babes in the woods could be more ynfitted for the management of hnéiness affairs than these Managers. Mrs. Toodles herself would cer- tainly never have paid $35,000 for their pile of cheap trumpery, and surely $35,000 never be- fore was invested in printers ink—printing and advertising, so unprofitably! Bat we think these gentiemen unwittingly do themselves an injustice. Hall bas the eye of a hawk and the beak of an eagle, and Morse has the air and bearing of a man who has the possession of his perceptive faculties tea remarkable degree. They are certainly too *\’umbie”’ by half. THE WHITE HOUSE. ‘The Cabinet Meeting to-day was attended all the members, and wasin session till a late hour. Apart from the meeting nothing of'spe- , cial interest transpired, and the absence of visitors gave tothe White House a very quiet appearance. DECISION IN RELATION TO BOUNTIES.
