STRUGGLE FOR THE CHAMPIONSHIP, A special dispatch from New York yester- day aiternoon to the Philadelphia Inquirer, says: The first of a series of three great games, for the championship of the United States, be- tween the Atlantic Base Ball Club. of Brook- lyn, and the Athletics, of Philadelphia, came off tois afternoon. at the Capitoline Grounds, Brooklyn, and resulted in a yictory for the Atlantics by aecorce of twenty-eeven to seven- teen. At least thirty thousand persons were present, ard the popalar excitement attend- ing the game was very great. Owing to the admirable police arrangements, excel- lent order was preserved, and, not withstand- ing the immense crowd tiie players were not in the leastinterfered with. The game was a estoutly contested one, both clubs playing splendid Up to the sixth innings the game was even, standing eleven runs each. At this time theexcitement was great, and the friends ot he-Athlettcs were sanguine of success. Two of their men, however, became tially dis. abled, and some remarkable piny ry the Atlan. tue put them eight runs abead at the end of the seventh tonings, which gap in the score the Atleties were unable te fill up, although they played mantully. But two home runs were made during the entire game, and they are cred- ited to Dockney.of the the Athletic, and Start, of the Atlantic. The Atlantics missed three fly- eatcbes and the Athletics the same. Reach and Fisler, of the. Athletics, distinguished them- selves by fine playing. During the game any particularly good bar ex received tumultuous applause from the thousands of friends and supporters of either club. The Athletics con- fess themselves fairly and honorably defeated, but have confidence ‘still in becoming the champion club. The Umpire was Mr. Geo. Fianley, of the Excelsior Club, and bis de- cisions gave general satisfaction. The Capi- toline Grounds were gaily decorated with flags, and the scene-presented during the game was picturesque in the extreme. The following is the score* ATLANTIC. 0. R. ATHLETIC. 0.
