WASHINGTON OITY: SATURDAY...........0CTOBER 6, 1466, S7 READING MATTER ON RVERY PAGE. SEE OUTSIDE FOR INTERESTING THLE- GRAPHIC AND OTHER MATTER. CIRCULATION OF THE CITY PRESS. The following is the official showing of the eirculation of the daily papers of this city eompeting for the Government advertising Under the recentaet of Congress directing such advertising to be made in the two daily news- Papers of Washington baving the largest SESSATION STORY FROM NEW OB Via TH oP es Bi T OF THE TRIBUNE. The Washington correspondent of the Kew York Tribune professes to have received the tollowing startling information from New Orleans: “Some important disclosures will soon be officially made public in reference to secret Tebel societies, which permeate the entire South. These organizations have branch circles in New York city and the West. That in New York is said to number 50,000, principally com- ored of men who served in the rebel army. b Sy circle bas a different name. Some are known as «The Trne Sons of the South,” otbers as “The Knights of Arabia,” and all are well armed with the most improved weapons, ready ata moment's notice should a favorable opportunity arise, to renew the struggle for the Jost cause. One of the chief members of this organization, now in prison, said to have made important disclosures. yeneral Sheri- dan is concentrating troops in thig city for important purposes, wBich will soon be made apparent. «Nine cases of whipping of negroes have been recently officially reported in the parish of Bienville. Gne old woman, 70 years of age, received 400 lashes.” This siatement, if true. would certainly indi- cate & very alarming state of affairs in the South; but considering the alembic througa which the story has been distilled, we may safely dismiss apy tears of being immediately overrun by the swarming “Sons of the South.” ‘There bas always been a piqaant degree of uncertainty in regard to the reliability of Tri- bune Washington correspondence, but within the past month its racy flavor has develeped into such unmistakeable romance, as to cause many to suppose that Mr. Cobb, of the New York Ledger, bas been put in charge of the Trebune bureau bere. The editor of the 7ri- dune seems, however, to have come te the con- clusion that a coloring of fact is not undesira- ble in a Washington letter, and week be Teads a sbarp lecture to its Washington corge- spondent tor sending them such unreliable trash, and adds pointedly “We have dismissed several of his prede- cessors for like errors, and he will have to foi- low im their foot-steps if he cannot more eare- tully discriminate between what may be, and whatis. We have often been strongiy moved to forego all Washington telegraphy, because of just such errors as are bere reprebended. Bat we must make one or two more atlempts to mproye it before we decide to give it up.” May we not bope that in his alarming state. ; mentof the coing-to-be doings of the rampa- ging“Keignhts of Arabia’ and -sSons of the South,” the correspondent has failed to care- | fully discrimmate between what may be or isn't, and whatis A CARD FROM “DRUID.” «Devrp."—It now appears that Mr.C.
