"THE EVE} a Tug Captain Runs var with Another [Prom the Buffaio Expréss ) A singuiar elopemen: took piace im this city | 4ast week, in which a well-known tng captaa and a Mrs. H—— are the principals, It seems that during the absence of Mr. m1. in the army, quite an intimacy » ‘Dg up between the cap- _ tan and Mrs. H., who were next door neiga- bors on 4th street, and that on the retura of the soldier, who, by the way, is badly given to in- Gulging in the flowing bowl, this liaison was not broken off. but rather increased in strength, and became so apparent as to acouse the sus- picions of the captain's injured wife, who one | day encountered the seductive grasa widow on the street and administered to ber severe casti- | gauen with her own bands. When the yic- { tim arrived at home, her husband gave her | another “censuring.”” The matter created | considerable scandal along the street. and iG STAR. | for the enamon couple appeared to | be congenial spirits, whiie the other balf of | each were spoken of in terms which indicated each to be respectively a disagreeable com- panion. Matters continued to improve “no Detter yery fast,” until one day iast week, when Firs. H.. who poscessed a house and lot | an her owa name, disposed of the same, send- ing ber husband, the unfortunate Mr. H., to New York, with metructions to purchase a | cans! boat, and promising to forward the | Money te pay for it by draft. He had not more (bap fairly started on his journey before she pacaed up her movables, and with the Captain departed for some region of bliss un- | known, takeing with her all the money and two children. Mr.H. was in New York at last | Secounts, awaiting the arrival of the draft to | psy for his canal boat; and the Captain's un- | jortunate grass widow was considerably ex- cited, but not likely to lose any flesh through | melancholy. The considerate neighbors, who will talk, if they do pot say much, suggest the | Telics unite their fortunes and trot along to- gether, and call it a tair swap. es Prize FicuTtnc.—Aaron Jones has chal- Jenged Mike McCool, the recent victor in the prize fight at St. Louis, wo fight for the belt and a large sum of money, in case Joe Coburn does not offer to enter the arena for the champion- sbip. The New York Tribune of yesterday says, however: “McCool having challenged Joseph Coburn, (whe fought McCool in Mary- land three years ago, and whipped him terri- bly) to fight him for any sam from 1,000 to 35.400, Coburn replied on Thursday saying: +I will fight. Put up you mouey. Time and piace to ,be considered hereatier.” Coburn has been a successful prize fighter, and is anx- jous to again enter the brutal arena. He also offers to put ap £1,600 upon his barkeeper agminst Mc, while still another party has de- Posited S10 at the office of the sporting organ tn this city toward a stake to be fought for by Bimeelf and McCool.” Great MEETINGS OF MINERS IN ENGLAND The don Teiegrapb contains an account of two immense meetings of English colliers, the one beld at Chesterfield comprising from five to esght chousand, the other at Barnesiey, es timated at from fifteen to twenty, thousand. Work was suspended for the day.” The men were accompanied by their wives and child- ren.and went in troops in the procession, with music and banners. The speakers talked politics but little, but had agreat deal to say about wages, hours of labor, sick tuna, Gov- ernment imspection of mines, &c. A hymn ‘wes sung both at the opening and close of the session. There was no rioting, no drinking, and universal order prevailed, and the Tete- graph, naturally enough, calls the attention of the Tory managers “wo their gigantic or- eSeization, discussing their affairs with busi- bess-like sagacity.’’ $< —Sa Hoormse Corex.—tt is now pretty well known that the emanations of gas works are an admirable specific forthe hooping cough, Hut itis not always convenient to go there, es- ‘peciatly when the distance is considerable. From the Norfula Virginian, Sept. 24.) Ectece halincipation has possessed the ofthis city. From the fact that sii the cases of coolera occurring in the > ere amang their own color, they have been ignorantly led to believe that the disease was not cholera at all, buat that the deaths were brought abont by the administration of poigon by the physicians. Thissu ‘sttion was t staried in Richmond, we believe, where, so d@larmed were the negroes in some instances, that they concealed the existence of cholera cases among them, ip order that no physician should visitthem. Thoee neglected cases, of course, proved fatal. The ve heathenish superstition is an alarming one to possess the negro mind; and while nothing cou!d possibly be more un- founded, foolish, or absurd, great harm may formed. among the aegre population, thontd al ie m shou disapnse the minds of those of their class tainted by false ideas of the humasity of our physicians, for certainly they have done much to alleviate their sufferings, and bave by their timely attendance saved many from the grave. Why the creater number of cholera cases occur among the negroes, and why the whites are al- most entirely exempted from the disease, is easily enougb explained from namra! canses. The negroes live in crowded tenements of :m- perfect ventilation; their food is poor, and often decidedly unwholesome; and they Jack medicines and immediately at hand when the disease attacks its victim. The foolish talk among the negroes that the white physicians are in any way instrumental iv een ‘ion of death among them is too ridiculous and absurd to be for © moment en- tertamed, and the negroes would do well to dismiss it from their minds.
