Its history is a little curious. In the year 1535, it appears, Mr. Cebb was called on by a lad to change a $10 note. Upon looking at it, he discovered it Was & genuine $1, bill, and be was curious to know something more about it. So great a mistake in the denomina- tion of a note was not ordinarily made. He re- tained it for inquiry, and then ascertained that it bad been offered te a lady who condacied the millinery business, by @ negro woman, in pay for some articles. That somebody was the loser to tbat amount seemed almost certain Mr. Cobb. under the circumstances, felt him- self justifiable in retaining the note, so as to find the owner. He advertised it at varions times for some four years, and never had a call for it. Tired of berg its custodian, in February, 1842, he deposited it in the city treasury, wiih $>0.40 interest, in trust for the benefit of the owner, if he shoald ever be found. Efforts have been made, at one time or another, by parties in the way of administration, or as descendants of the colored woman, long since deceased, to get possession of it, but without effect. Since the time of deposit with the city the #1,(Su.40 have been lying in the city treasury, awing interest, and at this time the sum amounts to near $3,000. This. hy the action of the ity Council within a day er two past, it has been determined shall be appropriated to the use ot the «Union Orpban Asylum.” Thus the mys- terious note is finally disposed of. In addition to the singularity of the fact that Mr. Cobb never found a legal claimant for the note, not- witbstanding his re advertisements, it seems that the colored woman, who presented it to pay abil}. never even appeared to make a claim for it —Baltimore Sun. SINGULAR UCase. ner’s inquest was held at Communipawon urday on the body of James Conroy, who was drowned in the bay on Sunday night. lt appears that the deceased had been employed to carry Thomas Monohan outtoapile driver lying in the stream. The two m ‘arted ina light race boat, but’after roceeding a short distance the boat capsized. th men goton the bottom of the boat, but it Was so light as to sink them to the waist. Each got bold of su oar, and the supposition is that Monohan, tearing that the boat would not sus. lain two men, succeeded in pushing his com- panion off. whereby he was drowned. The post mortem examination disclosed injuries which must have been received before death. Cries of ‘ murder” were heard by persons on shore while the two men were floating on the boat, and & man putont to the spot whence they is- sued but only found the capsized boat. The ingnett is not concluded. Monoban isin lody awaiting the result of the investigation.— N_Y. Times, Oct.1. Lire INsvRANCE Uonvention.—The con- vention of life insurance agents, held at Hart- ford.
