“THE EVENING STAR. LOCAL NEWS. DISTRIBUTION OF PREMIUMS AT ST. PE- Tex’s.— Yesterday afternoon, the annual di-- tribution of premiums at St. Peter's Sunday School (Capito! Hill) took place at the chureb, which was attended by many of the parents and friends of the pupils. The pupils assem- bied about 7 in the school building in the rear of church, and after forming in procession, numbering about 350 teachers, marched into the church, the colored scholars bringing uptherear. Here, after they had become seated in the body of the chureti, Rev. Father Boyle, the pastor, addressed them, complimenting them on their fine appearance and large numbers, and expressed his gratifica- tion that they who composed the nursery of the church were tbus early preparing to be- come the future congregation of the church. The distribution was immediately entered upon, Mr. V. E. King announcing the names of the recipients, each of whom, as their name ‘was called, advancing to the platform and re- ceiving their premium at the hands of Father Boyle, who had a pleasant word foreach. The Prizes consisted of tour gold crosses and over 150 books of religious or moral character. The following is the hst of awards: Female Department—Gold Cross—Alice Smith. Yesterday, Mrs. M. J. | Harrover, who resides in Georgetown, went to | the station house there and described a pitcher whieh had been stolen from her house. It answ the description offthe one stolen, and | Sergt. Essex telegraphed the tact to the detec- tives. This morning Miller bad a hearing, Mrs. Harrover ittentified the pitcher, and Superin? tendent Richards sent Miller to jail for court. —_—e—_—— THE TEMPERANCE MOVEMENT.—There was | Uite a large turnout yesterday afternoon at e temperance meeting held in the Capitol grounds, under the auspicies of the Metropoli- tan Temperance Union. The army hav- ing disbanded and the locality less profitab! than before, the neighbors are now endeayor- ing to reform the row, and if possible, restore it to its former good reputation. — SHOOTING AFFAIR.— Yesterday, officer Stinchcomb, of the First Ward, arrested Wm. E. Snowden, colored, for shooting Richard Minor, colored. Snowden was carried to the First Ward station-house, where he had a hearing pefore Justice Bates. It appeared in evidence that Snowden and another negro named Edward Taylor, were pitching cents on l4th, near M street, and a dispute arose about the ownership of acent. The dispute became so hot that Taylor gave Snowden the d—d lie. Snowden replied with an oath that he would shoot Taylor, and drew a pistol and fired at him. .The ball struck the rim of Taylor's hat and passed throngh, and struck Minor, who was standing by, the ball entering the back, just below the ribs, and apparently through into the stomach. A surgeon was called upon, but did not succeed in extracting the ball up to the time of trial. Justice Bates committed Snowcen to jail for further hearing After shooting Minor, Snowden ran, and was pur- sued. A German met him and attempted to trip him down, but, unfortunately, he failed, and his own leg was fractured by a fall. dl Granp LARCENY.—Emeline Harris, col.,was arrested yesterday by officer Kearny for the lar- ceny of a quantity of dress goods, the property of Abraham Walskey.
