Tbe bill to protect the revenue reported in the House of Representatives jast Friday, by Mr. Morrill, trom the Committee on Ways ma Means, provides that after August 1, 1966, lu- ues as follows shall be levied on imports ofthe following articles of merchandise: On cigars, cigarettes, cheroots of all kinds, $2.50 per pound, and 5) per cent ad Valorem. On all som- pounds or preparations of which distilled spirits is a component part of chief value there shall be levied a duty of not less than that im- posed upon distilled spirits. The Bureau of tistics to be attached tothe Treasury De- partment, as provided tn the tariff bill, is in- cluded in this. Some days agoa man named Haurserman deposited 2 letter in a street box, and not Naving a stamp, dropped three cents in the box with the letter. The carrier, in me king collections, found three let- ters in the box, with mouey sufficient to pay the postage on two of them, neither of the let- ters bearing avy mark to designate whether the money accompanied them. The carrier affixed stamps to two of them, and Mr. H.'s Jeter wen! to Washington, and was returned for non-payment of postage. Upon receiving the letter, H. became very indignant, and cal- ling at the store where the box was located, he foolishly tore it from its fastenings and kicked it into the street. For this offence he was ar- resied and held to answer at the next term of the United States Court at Cleaveland. ‘TRE METHODISTS.—The London Patriot Says that Wesleyan Methodism has come toa stand- still mn Great Britain. In Staffordshire and all the ‘soutbern districts it has heen steadily losing ground for several years.
