Mr. Hyde, from the | tanding committee, re) back tne resoln- tion in favor of Mr. Reever, recommending that, instead of granting the office free of & the rent be fixed at one-half the present | Mr. Thomas offered a resolution antho1 ie Corporation to rent 1 for snca ‘monthly rent as he may deem reasonable. The following resolutions were then taken “Fire The resolution favor of the Vigilant Fire Company; third reading to by Mr. Thomas—iaid over under the rule. The resolution suthorzing the appoint- ment of additional iamplighters; The Council resolution aathorizing the renting of the whart at the foot of High street. Mr. Thomas offered as a substi- & resolution authorizing the Mayor to rent wharf to the bighest bidder for cash, for t the the term of one year. Mr. Cropley opposed the Tesolution. He thought the wharf ought to be gtanted to the Ne ork Steamship Company, as that company needed it, and doubted the right of the Corporation to" sell or rent the wharves, because, in his opinion, they should be considered highways. If heowned property adjoining them he would contest the right of the Corporation to sel] or rent them. Mr. Thomas said that he believed the wharf should not be disposed of in any other way than by public auction. There were several applicants for it, and he beld that the Corporation should give all equal opportunities to obtain ut. Mr. Cropley replied, when the question was called, result :—Ayes, Messrs. Noes, Messrs. rt ag id Heiston. The Re- corder then voted a: the resolution passed. The Council subsequently returned the resolution, having rejected the substitute and adhered to the original resolation. On mn of Mr. Thomas, the Board receded from tion in passing the substitute, and the | original resolution was passed.
