Hovse—After our report closed yesterday— The House adjarncd without taking final action om the case of Hon. James Brooks, whose seat is contested by W. Dodge. Late Southern Items. Our Southern dispatches announce destruc- tive fires at Tan ville, Va. and Darlington, South Carolina. The eo General W. W. Wood, leader of the Brazilian emigration scheme, has re- nounced Brazil, and become again & citizen of Mississippi. A telegram from Lonisiana indicates that recently tn the Parish Iberville. six fine plan- tations sold for less than machinery upon them originally cost. The Raleigh (N. C.) Standard says that Gov- ernor Worth, of that State, appoints none but rebels to office, anc that he has gone over fully te the disloyal faction. Six locomotives, six passenger cars, and one hundred freight cars are to be added immedi- Ately to the rolling stock of the Galveston and Heuston railroad. Ageuts are busily at work, in East Tennes- fer, hiring negro laborers to go to Mississippi, Arkensas and elsewhere. Four hundred passed down the Tennessee and Georgia rail- Foad last week. The Savannah Republican of the 19th inst. gives an account ofa fight atnight between five soldiers and a@ party of negroes, in which the negroes used pistols. wounding two of the soldiers. The soldiers appear, from that paper's account. to have been the aggressors. The Galveston papers say that real estate bas grestly advanced im that city. Tenements Snd lots are selling for more than three times what th cost ten years ago. Meanwhiie trade is rood, and the grain marketis rapidly filling uy by importations of corn, by ,thou- sands of bushels trom New Orleans. A Shreveport (1.a.) paper of a late date says: “For the past few days the Provost Guard has been doimg a lively business in gathering inan abundant crop of federal buttons found stick- ing to citizens clothes. White and biack were marched up to the captain's office, to undergo the pruning operation, much to the delight of the colored soldiers.” Aconeurrence of testimony indicates that the ex-rebele of Missouri are preparing to re. new the guerrilla warfare. Many of the better dis posed class of Rebels im wide of the State have evineed of Inte a disp to move to other State: dies, Sixty rebel now in St. Louis, en rou’e to Montana t they expect troubie from the acts of less men lately in the service of the rebels, they wish te escape befere the trouble ich is sure to follow, commences. Seven ex-rt bels from Francis county, en route to ives the same reason. Anex- i before the Grand Jury of Jack- son county, last week, that many of the more desperate threaten to take the bash in the Spring. Tue Rerortep F ks IN RicnMonp.— 7 past this city has been rife with Wild rumors with regard to a large number of fa:lures among our most extensive merchants, after a searching investigation, we assure the reports 2re almost entire- y Not one house mentioned has yet euspended business, and, so far as we have been able to ascertain, everyone of them are fully able to meet their liabilities to the last dollar. No notice has heretofore been taken of these unpleagant stories, for the simple reason that it was thought public reference to them would do no good, and that if let alone they would die out of themselves; but as they are sull kept up, aod each day the list is added to, we have thought it best to warn the public, both at home and abroad, against giving them any credence whatever. Our merchants—and, in fact, everybody—are rather cramped for mouey, itis trae, and some of them may have been compelled to ask favors at the hands of their creaitors, but then that is nothing un- usual, and no sign of absolute failure. The reports do no good, however, and we hope bereatter tohear nothing more of them.—7imes. Rrat Estate Saces in Vin A.—Gen. J (©. Pemberton bas purchased the place of M: Sullivan, 3% miles from Warrenton, contai ing 2 acres, for $5,600. On S numberof sales was made by Rice W. Payne and others, under a decree of the circuit court ip the case of Phillips vs. Fant, in that town and adjacent thereto. A lotof 78 acres, near town, was soid for $50.50 per acre. Another lot, more remote from town, at 333 per acre. A very small jot at the corner of Lee and South streets for the sum of $1,010. A very lot and tenement on Winchester street 0. The dwelling-house and lot of Mr. J. L. Fant, on Lee street, for #2,250. Rice W. Payne bas purchased of William Golway his brick store-house, corner of Lee and South Pitth streets, at €2.250 in cash. These sales in- dicate unmistakably that Warrenton has com- meneed a career of improvement, notwith- standing the many disadvantages and draw- backs its citizens have had to encounter. 7A correspondent of the Madison (Ind.) Jourual complains of the want of kindly feel- ng ‘owards Northerners among Southern peo- ple. He eays.—At a plantation I visited, the lady owner, who was a widow, spoke so fre- quently and bitterly of the “Yankees,” that it was getting Bard toendure. Witha view of checking the unkind expressions used in speakingof my ie, I gently informed her that l was trom the North myself. It had its effect, tor thereatter she made handy use of the Pronoun, instead of the adjective. “Madam, have you any milk?” “No! you Yankees stole all my cows.” -Boy,” said I, turning abruptly to her son, a Jad of twelve years or more, “bow old are you?” “Don’t know.
