Th A grand mass meeting of the friends and supporters of the administration of President Jobnson will be held in front ef the City Hall to-morrow evening, when one of the greatest demonstrations ever witnessed in the District of Columbia may be expected. Among other eminent gentlemen who are expected to de- liver addresses on the occasion may be men- tioned Senators Doolittle and Cowan, Repre- sentatives Green Clay Smith, of Kentucky, Delano, of Ohio, and Stillwell, of Indiana; Marshal D S. Gooding, Major General Rous- seau, M. O. from Kentucky; Major General Steadman, from Ohio, and Gen. J. L. Swift. enth CONNECTICUT ELECTION. The returns from the entire State of Connec- cut given im our telegraphie column, show that Gen. Hawley is elected Governor by a majority of 509 only. The Republicans have & majority in both branches of the Legislature, so tbat Mr. Foster, the present acting Vice President of the United States, or some other Republican, will be chosen U.S. Senator. The inevitable showman, P. T. Barnum, is among the Republicans elected to the House. We are unable to see on what grounds the New York Tribune pronounces the result of this election “a grea“ victory.” If the party Tepresented by that journal claims the success- ful candidate as a Radical Republican they cannot certainly be overjoyed at the fact that there is a falling off in the majority of more than 10,000 since last year, when the Re- publican candidate, Buckingbam, was elected Governor by 11,035, nor will they be able to giean much coméort from this other fuct that since last year they have lost several State Senators and- over thirty members of the House. At this rate how long will it take to “reconstruct” Connecticut, and place the ma- jorities on the other side ? - But the claim of the Tribune is fallacious. Hawley announced himself triendly to the Administration. Thousands of those who voted for him declared that their candidate was a triend of President Johnson. The con- vention that nominated him supported the President. Republican committees wrote from here that the President desired Hawley’s elec- tion. But for these facts, the result, we appre- hend, would have been very different. If General Hawiey is not a friend of the Presi- dent, but sides with his radical opponents, there has been, to state the least, a lack of good faith somewhere. brid, that Ca CHOLERA IN FRANCE. A new turn tothe imbroglio is now occasioned by the fact that the original company (the Alexandria and Washington company) haye, through James S. French, in- stituted suit against the Washington, Alexan- dria and Georgetown compeny tor the recovery of the track and all the other appurtenances of the road. It will be remem! that a trustee sale of the old road was made during the war (in 1862) by J. B. Stewart under deed of trast to Walter Lenox and a new company organ- ized under the latter mame. The old’ Alexan- dria and Washington company now allege that in December last a meeting of the stocikhold- ers of that company was held in Alexan- dria at which Jas.S. French was re-elected President and a board of directors appointed. Now, this Company has brought before the Hon. Henry W. Thomas, Judge of the Court for the Alexandria Circuit, a bill against the Washington, Alexandria and Georgetown Rail- road Company, J. B. Stewart and various oth- er parties, praying for an injunction against their longer possession of the Road, and base their plea upon the following reasons, amongst others, viz: That $30,C00in conpon bonds of the Alexandria and Washington Railroad Com- pany, for whieh the road was made liable, were delivered by Mr. French to Jos. Thorn- ton, through false representations, and that the sale was in violation of an act of the Vir- gs Legislature; that the proceedings in the Jounty Court of Alexandria County by which Walter Len ificeas trus- tee of the road, and J.
