It is strictly observed by the Ostho- lie and Greek Churches, and to some extent by various other denominations. The fast during this week is more austere than during any other ume in lent. On Palm Sunday the Catholic Church celebrates the triumphant entry of Christ into Jerusalem. In commemo- Fation of the deyout Jews who strewed green olive sod palm tree branches along the road before our Saviour. palms or other green twigs are blessed and distributed by the priests to the members of that Church on this day, and ‘the history of the Lord's Passion is read. On Wednesday the oifice of the Tenebral is Said, expressive of the mourning for our Lord, and in memory of the darkness which cevered earth at the crucifixion. Maundy Thursday, the Last Supper, and the inst:!ution of the Holy Sacrement is com- Memorsied. After the mass on this day the bells of the Catholic churches are not rung Until the “Gloria in Excelsis” at the Resur- Tection Mass fer Easter. During the same time allthe altars are uncovered and stripped of their ornaments. On Friday the cracifixion of our Saviour is commemorated. The Cathelic Church in her Office expresses the deepest mourning and com- punction, the altars being naked except at the priest's communion. when they are blacix, and the crucifix is covered with a black veil uatil the prostration, after which it remains uncov- ered. No mass is said or sacrifices offered ex- cept the holy sacrament, which is received in one kind by the priest (no others receiving it except sick in mortal danger of death.) On Saturday, or Easter Eve, the lying of Christ in thesepulchre is observed. gmciently ”O Mass Was allowed to be said on this day, but at present the Mass of the Resurrection for- merly said at midnizhtis now performed a Little before noon. Formerly this office was commenced by blessing the fire and then the paschal cradle, after which the ancient proph- ecies were read, the fount blessed and baptism administered. Then followed matuns. and at midnight the celebration of the Mass of the Resurrection, after which the festivities of Easter commenced. Yesterday at all the Catholic Churches the ceremonies were very impressive. At St. Mloysius the large Sunda chool formed in he school ter the palms ed by Rev. or Wigett, and r ¢ church in a body. The various Churches whieh observe this Week will, no doubt, be largely attended. < bet [Am isrortaxt Dec:siox.—On Saturday, Sadge Wylie, in the District Supreme Court. gz as a Court of Equity, rendered a deci- in the case of B. H. Cheever agt. Annie J Worcester (iormerly Cheever) and Jesse B. Wilson. Cheever and his wife were married im 142, and they resided together until 1554, ‘when he left heron account of some disagree- ment. The property in question was heid by Mrs. Hughes, as trustee for Mrs. Cheever, and the latter continued to collect the rents trom Jesse B. Wilson, the lessee. Atthatttme there was no law authorizing in this Districta de- cree of divorce, although through the courts a separation and alimony could have been pro- cured. In 1957, Mrs. Cheever went to Indigna, and,as she alleges, took up her residence. where she instituted suit foradivorce. Her Jease to Wilson bears date one month after she imstituted the decree for a’divorce, and in itshe Gescribes herself as “of the city of Washiug- top.” After the decree was obtained she re- turned tothe District. and subsequently was married to Worcester, and claimed her resi- dencein Kentucky. * Judge Wylie hela that during coverture the wife has no power to change her residence, and cites several authorities, and closes by re- marking that after the marriage has been sol- emnined, the contract is thenceforth functus of- cio. The parties have then become subjects ‘of the marriage state, an institution whose ob- bgations and duties are independent of con- tract and of the will of the parties, and im- posed by law for the welfare of soeiety; an institution established in the beginning by the Almighty Lawgiver, and recognised in every age as the foundation of civilization, prosper- Sy, and virtue, withont which the human Face itself must perish from its own vices: the refiner of manners, the parent of knowledge, Mirifiness, and industry: the promoter of de- corum, order and decency in private life; the strength and bulwark of the State: the secure ‘Basis of society, and the ornament of all its in- Mitutions; -principem eobis. et quasi semina- rium respybhice.”” An institution so established in the Inws, and bound up with the structure of society, the State cannot allow to be made the subject of traffic like a chattel. So long, therefore, asthe parties retain their domicil under its Psat mgr the State will not per- Tait ys policy to be thwarted and its laws evaded by the interference of any foreign trib- unal. As well might any Saguee assume to dissolve the m: bonds between the citizens of a different State by an immediate act, a6 to attempt to accomplish the same pur- pose by means of authority conferred upon its courts. 3 ——e—__—_ Fire ALARMS.—Saturday afternoon, an slaria of tire was sounded from box No. 3, near the Anacostia Engine House, which was promptly responded to by the fire department, but upon Arriving at the spot they ascertained that it Was a talse alarm, caused by the ringing of the bell in the Navy Yard, calling the men to ex- ercise with the fire apparatus there, which ‘was mistaken outside for an alarm of fire in the Navy Yard. Yesterday morning, about nine o’clock, an alarm of fire was cansed by the burning of a foul chimney on 4th street, near New York avenue, which again called out the firemen. About 11 o’clock, it was reported at the cen- Hoty Wer bie: tral office of the fire alarm telegraph that a desk and papers in the office of m. Fry ac- cidently took fire, and was burned. The acci- dent caused no alarm outside, and the fire did no other damage than the destruction of the desk and papers. A mattress in a house on ith, near N street, tock fire about one o'clock yesterday, from a spark from a stove, but the flames were ex- tunguished before any severe damage was done. Sear Haxpsome Compiinent.—Last Saturday Superintendent Richards, of tie Metropoli- tan Police, promoted Cornelius Noonan, the old efficient clerk of the Detective force, to a clerkship in the Superintendent's office. As soon as the detectives were aware of the pro- motion they went to work to obtain for him a testimonial of their eswem, and purchased from Dempsey & O'Toole, 326 Pennsylvania venue, 2 splendid gold pen and case, which was formaily presented on behalf of the force by Detective Claryoe with an appropriate ad- «ress, reviewing the services of Mr. Noonan in connection with the ferce, and expressing their gratification at the promotion, though re- retting the loss of so valuable an assistant. Ts this address Mr. Noonan responded in ap- pro eterms. Mr. N. a faithful officer of the Third Ward at the first, and his useful- ness there gained for him a transfer to the Detective office, where his usefulness and in- dastry have again promoted him. Mr. Moses Meredith, of the Eighth precinct, has been de- tailed to fill the vacancy caused by the pro- motion. ——_e—___. Tur St. ANDEEW'S CHURCH Sitr.—On Sat- urday, inthe Chancery Court, Judge Wylie made a decision in the case of Casbing mst Stone, Tayloe, Hutton and others, restoring to the plaintiff square No. 224, bounded by isth street, Vermont avenue and N street north. The plaintiff, Hon. Caleb Cushing, deeded in 1558 the property described to W. J. Stone, Sr., B. Ogle Tayloe, Wm. Hutton, R. B. Ironsides and Rey. James A. Harrold, in trust for the use of an association tobe known as St. An- drew's Mission Congregation, who were to erect 8 church thereon to be under the Protest- aut Episcopal diocese of Maryland, the seats of which were to be free to the public. The trustees took the matter in hand and succeeded in raising enough fonds to Iay the foundation of the ge om edifice and the project fell through. sequently Mr. Cushing sued for, he property, and now proposes it is said, to bestow it b: ne’ in trust for a congre- gation of the Enghsh Lutheran Charch, who Promise to erect & church edifice immediately. Free x vax County —Last night, a frame voildiog, a part of the parsonage property of the Rock Creek Church, accidentally took fire trom the kitchen and was entirely consumed.
