Tut ASSASSINATION OF SECRETARY Szw- ARD.— About five or six days ago a man named Sterling King was arrested in this city and lodged in the county jail on a charge of horse stealing, and held to await a requisition from the Governor of Ohio. On Sunasy last he be- came a little soft, opened his mind to another prisoner, and informed him that he was one of the parties engaged in the attempted assassi- nation of Secreiary Seward. Major General Jeff. C. Davis, commander of the department during the absence of General Palmer, was at once informed of the matter and immediately proceeded to the jail, where he had a long in- terview with King, who again confesses that he was one of the conspiratars. Gen. Davis then telegraphed to Washington on the subject, and we bave not as yet learned if there have been any instructions received relative to the prisoner. It is believed that King, who is a shrewd vagabond and has been in both armies during the late war, having been arrested by the Confederate authorities and tried as a spy, and served a sentence with ball and chain in the Newport Barracks tor swindling tne Uni- ted States Government, and is now giving out this information in order that he may get into the hands of the military authorities, whom he knows cannot make a case agaiust him, and by so doing hg will get out of hie horse stealing difficulty. ¢ is indicted in Cincinnati on two charges of horse stealing, and it is reported that several other charges are ready to be brought against him Hts home has not yet ascertained, although he has been in tue nd* of our police for over a week.—Louis- rille Courier, A Man Kitiep By A WoMan.—In the neigh- borkood, six or eight miles east of this place. a few Gays since occurred & most horrible mur- der of a man named han, by a woman. A man by the name of han, who wasa lie-out from the army, while hiding from the conscript officers formed an acqnaint- ance of the aforesaid widow, which ripened imto an inumacy ofa criminal character. When the surrender was made, the deserting hus- band returned home and found bis wife encierte by the man Ghan. The husband very firmly informed his wife that she could only repair the wrong sbe had committed by the murder of her seducer; that he would leave her itshe did not killhim. The sufferer was the venerable Oardinal then telling the tale, snd inspite of official resistance the Senate voted that the petition should be referred to the Minister of the Interior for action. The idea of the French authorities is, that as the living and the dead are among the poor forced to remain in the same room, interment cannot ; but twenty-four hours isa hor- ribly short space of time ina country where itis not sufficient to produce any symptom of corruption. Crossiey. who slowly and hesitating- ly uttered the startling words, «I've had the rinderpest—" and when the burst of laughter following the incomplete sentence had eub- sided, added, “I immediately sent for the Gov- ernment inspector.” The report in the es is asfollows: Sur F.
