Lost His CLloTaes.—A few nights ago, a gentleman whom we snall call Maggms, after Playing seven-up at Bessehl’s until after 11 o’olock, sought his domieile ina state of stag- Ting salubrity. The cunning of men in that aPPY condition is proverbial, and Muggins had often deceived his wife, as he supposed, by various excuses to account for his delay in coming home. On this oceasion he hit upon the plan of disrobing in the dressing-room, and slipping quietly into bed, and making his | wife believe that he had been to roost for at least an hour. Full of this cunning idea, he entered the dressing-room softly, and | morc himself before the ndow, which been left open, he pulledoft his overcoat. He would not take time to hang his duds on | the hooks, but would just toss them in and let | them bang on the floor. It so happened that he mistook the open window for the wardrobe, and pitched his overcoat out. His undercoat, vest, and ts, with a fine gold repeater in the tob ‘et followed suit. Withont discoy- ering bis mistake, he slipped into bed, where Mrs. Muggins was comfortably snoozing, and went tosieep without jetting her kuow that he | bad returned. An inquiry Jed to the discovery that the person thus disguised was Miss Mary Simpson, @ native of hu- setts, abouteighteen years old. Abouta year ago she was the sole support of her mother, at orcester, where she worked in a mill. A young man, who is a machinist by trade, in- duced her to leaye her home in a clandesti: manner. The rest of the story is soon told. He accomplished her ruin, and left ner at Pitts. burg in a pitiable condition. After selling her clothing, she donned man’s apparel, and reached Philadelphia on a coal train, riding the whole way on an uncovered car. She has a very bad cold, and says she suffered intense agony during her long trip on the car. She ex- Eo & great desire to get back to her once appy home, but was also anxious to meet her betrayer that she might revenge her wrongs. &7 On Wednesday evening, a woman, close- ly vailed, stepped on board of the Newport ferry-boats, while a on the Kentucky shore, near Cincinnati. hen the boat reached the middle of the river, she deliberately left her seat, walked tothe rear guard and jumped overboard, and sunk, to rise no more.
