Dr. S. A. H. McKim, surgeon of the police, under the @irection of the board, examined many cases Supposed to be the “cattle plague; and yes- terday Dr. Nichols laid before the board a re- rt from Dr. McKim. in which he states that @ bad visited several dairies to ascertain if any disease existed among c.ttle, but found Bone. He says: “The cattle plague now prevailing in Eng- iand_ bas not appeared in our country as yet, and I think if proper means of quarantine are Maintained, will not doso. By many eminent tbologists the cattle plague or rin lerpest, as it bas been called, is considered an eruptive disease similar to small-pox, and that inocula- tion with the small-pox virus will prevent its spread among stock where it has made its ap- pearance. The cattle complaint which has visited several different cattle yards within this District, is one which, several years ago, made its appearance in the New England States, and is called pleuro-pneumonia, It istely appeared in Montgomery county, Pa., and the Legislature appointed a committee to inquire info its character, thinking from the first statement made to them that it was rin- Gerpest; but Dr. Hiram Corson, in his report to the Legisiature, has called it pleuro-pnenmo- nia, from the seat aad character of the disorder, and not the rinderpest.” Dr. Nichols concurs in this report. It may not be improper to state that several months since Dr. Gudgin and other veterinary sur- geons made a critical examination of the dis- raging among cattle in this city, and the conclusion that it was a disease of . chused in ® measure by the severity ather and want ef proper shelter {or the xnimais. The various charitable and eficial societies of our Celtic brethren hold ir annual meetings, elect their officers for the ensuing year, and close the Jabors of the Past by social reunions, and devoting a few pleasant hours to eloquence, wit, and music. The Young Hibernia Club will givea grand ball at Odd Fellows’ Hall to-night, and from the preparations making to have a good time, ‘we bave no doubt the festivities will be kept Up rntil “Patrick's day in the morning.” ‘We understand that the Circles of the Fenian Brotherhood of the District have resolved mot to make any public demonstration to-morrow by Procession, but that they will use what money such a demonstration will cost in the purchase ¢ bonds. Officer Doyle gaye chase to him, following him up 7th street, and raising an slarm, when the pursued party ran afoul ot officer Simonds at the corner of 7th and L streets. The officer grabbed him, and Doyle coming up, they succeeded, after the culprit had made a short resistance, in securing him, and taking him to the station, where he gave his name as Edward Hammond. This morn- ing, Justice Walter examined him, and com- mitted him to jail to answer the charge of ar- son. Itis very fortunate that the fire was dis- covered so soon, as the whole square is built up of frame structures. As it was, the neigh- bors extinguished the flames, and the officer succeeded im securing the incendiary, who, it is to be hoped, will receive such punishment as will check the increase of this crime. i U.S. Supreme Court, March 16.—No. 6.
