We learn that a couple of weeks ago a returned soldier. named George W. Weldon, bailing from Peoria, L11., came to Oxford, bringing with him a young and bean- Uful wife, a cultivated lady, from Tennes- see. The pair put up at the Girard Honse, of that town, and after remaining there a day or two, the busband, without notifying his wife of bis intentions, boarded the cars aud decamped for parte ‘unknown, leaying Bis hotel bill unpzid, id taking all the Toney they possessed, as well as his wife's wearing apparel, leaving her in desti- tute circumstances. Alone and unprotected, she was exposed tosuspicion and insult. In her hour of sore trial the seducer came and of- fered her money with which she woald be ena- bled to reach home, if she would prove recre- antto herself. But true to her noble woman- hood she spurned his offers, and preferred to die on the streets of cold and starvation rather than purchase the means of living at so fearful aprice. Reing driven by the eruel husband to seek shelter elsewhere, she was found by sym- pathizing friends who furnished her with Means sufficient to reach her father’s home at Loudon, East Tennessee. She has sinze reached home and has written to her kind friends in Oxtord. Her husband has not been heard from sine, though it is hoped that justice may over- take the scoundrel —Cincianati Enquirer, 9th. Cvriovs Cuvkes Dirricutty 1x Drrrorr A few days since the som of the pastor of the Reformed Dutch Cuurch, in Detroit, was de- tected in writing anonymoas letters of a wis. graceful character to several of the girls of the school attached to the church, and also to the teacher, for which the latter aciministered to him a severe castigation. At this the reverend centieman became incensed, and preferred serious charges again=t the teacher, accus. ing him with having improper relations with several of the older girls of the school. A m < of the congregatioW was accord- snugly held on Monday evening, to consider the question, and resulted in the teacher being sustained in his course by a majori- ty of the members of the congregation, though quite a number sustaimed the pastor. @onsiderable excitemerit was occasioned, and tor a ume, the life of the reverend gentleman | was im imminent danger from the infuriated | crowd. The timely appearance of the police, however, prevented any further disturbance, and allayed all fears for his safety. Tuesday morning. however, Mr. Oast preferred charges at the police court against the teacher for hay- ing improper relations with some of the female scholars, and caused his arrest. He gave bail to appear ata future time, to answer charges | against him.
