The latter formed an ambuscade and cnt off and massa- ered sixty of the French advance guard. The remainder of the French troops attacked, using bayonets vigorously, and forcing the Liberale to retreat. The New York stock market shows con- tinued firmness; the bull interest is gainiuy strength, and large operations are made foran advance in prices. The Commercial Advertiser says that yester- day Governments were in more demaiid and decidedly firmer. Ten-forties rose 4; Five- twenties, of 1865, %; amd Seveu-thirlies, \. There was more demand for cali loans, owing to the increased activity of stocks. The banks generally lend at 6 per cent: some private lenders, whe Thursday accepted 5 per cent., Were yesterday morning lending at 6 per cent. There is, however, a good deal of money lent at5 per cent. on both Governments and stock collaterals. Discounts unchanged. The de- mand for paper moderate, and the supply ample. The Government has sold moderate amounts du- ring the last few days, which has greatly eased the market, and there is, consequentiy, less borrowing. Mary Madeline Scout, a girl in her fourteenth year, who has been employed in the family of Mr. Mulford for the past four months, has, after constant Watching, been discovered to have been the cause of these mysterious occurrences. On Tuesday last she Was committed to the House of Refuge, on the complaint of her mother, who charges her with being incorrigibly vi- cious and beyond her control. When arraigned before a magistrate she stated that she had not been instigated by any one to do what she had done at the house of Mr. Mulford. She did not know why she did it. She said she never heard anything about spiritualists, nor had she ever read anything about them, or an: worke about ghosts or devils. She admitted that ifshe should want to make a clock, jook- ing-glaes, or picture f#1l, she would so loosen the fastenings that any one of the things would come down without trouble. After being committed to the House of Refage it is stated that she commenced cutting up her capers there, and was very saucy and insul:- ing tothe matron. lt appears that the magis- trate before whom the girl was brought had just opened a new docket.
