Hon. Simon Cameron, Lieutenant Goyernor Bross, of Lilinois, and a large number of Senators and resentatives. {seven o'clock George H. Stuart, Esq., the President of the Commission, entered from the a room accompanied by Lieutenant erai Grant, General Augur, Speaker Col- Senator Doolittie, Rev. Bishop Janes, igadier General Nichols, Hon. Charles Demond, Chaplain Boynton, Rey. Dr. Taylor and others. Speaker Colfax called the meeting to order, Snd announced the hymn, which the audience sung standing, led by Mr. Phillips, of Cincin- natu. Fag § ste Rev. C. H. Boynton, Chaplain Of the House, and the reading of the 46th Psalm Rea W.J.R. Taylor, D. D., of the American ble Society, an eloquentin troductory address Was delivered by the chairman of the meeting, Speaker Colfax. Geo. H. Stuart, Esq., President of the Com- Mission. was then introduced, and delivered an address containing much interesting informa- tion in relation to the operations of the Com- Mission. He said that the total value of the donations and facilities of the Commission reached the yast sum of $6,264,607.65, of which there remains a cash balance in all the treasu- ries of $90,223.28, which will be all dispensed by the several branches in strict accordance With the original purposes of the Commission. Rev. Edward P. Smith then read an abstract of the annual report, showing that during the first vear of the Commission 356 delegates were commissioned: the a following 1,207; the third year 2.217. In the four months of the pre- sent year, preceding the close of the war, 1,023 delegates were sent out, which rate continued through the year would have given 3.060. In the first year receipts amounted to $231,- 000; in the pone they reached $916,937; in the third year $92,347. From January to May, one-third of a year of active campaign, $2,225,105, which rate, continued 12 months, would have given for this last year $6,651,315. Letters from Secretary Stanton, Gen. Grant, Admiral Farragut. Gen. Sherman, and Chief Justiee Chase were then read, and Mr. Stuart said he had several other ietters which he could not stop to read; among others, letters from Gen. Howard, Gen, Thomas, ()uarter- ™aste: General Meigs, Gen. Butler, Gen. Ord, and Surgeon General Barnes. The Hon. Chas. Demond, of Boston, was then introduced, and — at length on the work accomplished by the Commission and its effect m the army. r. Phillips sang s hymn entitled “Your Mission,” before which Speaker Colfax said thathe held in his handa paper which he wished to read. It was a programme of the previous meeting of the Christian Commis- siop, which had been used by the Iate Presi- dent Lincoln, and on which he had written & request to have this same hymn repeated. Eloquent addresses were then delivered by Admirsi Davis, Rev. Herrick Johnson, Sen- ator Doolittle, General Augur, and Rev. B. W. Chidian. A telegram and letter from Gen. Meade were read, regretting his inability to attend. The audience then joined in Singing the bymp, “ My country, "tis of thee.” “The Rev. Bishop Simpson, of Philadel; followed in a very eloquent speech, an: a Rev. Prot. Lemuel Moss closed with a beauti- ful prayer; after which, the doxology was sung, and the ao pronounced by the Rey. Dr. Dyer, of New York. After the regular exercises were finished, Speaker Colfax said the Hutchinson family were present, and would sing one of their beau- tifal -ongs. This was received with applause. and the Hutchinsons favored the audience with two of their popular songs.
