It was at first arranged that he should be buried here, but seme of his kindred being buried at Parkers. burg, West Virginia, it was finally determined that what remained of poor Johnny M—— should be sent to that place. Accordingly, after a “wake,” (one of the good old sort,) the remains were accompanied by his sorrowing friends and relatives to the depot, to take the cars for the place of burial. The funeral pro- cession arrived at the depot some time before the departure of the train in which the remains Were to go, and the mourners spent the inter- vening time in assuaging their sorrows at the neighboring bars, so abundant in that vicinity, the corpse meanwhile remaining on the plat- form, ready to be placed on the Be m. train, which would connect at the Relay House with the Western train. The party meanwhile drank so many libations to the memory of the departed that they returned te the station in a very mellow condition, and the railroad offl- cers being apprehensive that they would be incapable ef taking care of the corpse, tele- graphed to the agent at the Relay to see that the corpse was taken off at that point. Shortly before the time of starting the corpse was placed on the train, and an attempt was made to muster the mourners, when it was ascertained that one or twoof them had got so obfusticated as to have taken the New York train. The rest of the party, however, managed to get aboard, and ere long Johnny M——’s body was again “marching on. At the Relay the corpse was transferred to the Westera train, but two or three of the mourners were too far gone to get out in time, and so pro- ceeded to Baltimore, while the balance of the party with the corpse was hurried on with extra speed Westward. At the imts along the road where the engine stop; “to water,” the mourners as invariably stoppea to *-wet,” and not beng up to time, quite as invariably a brace or more were left behind at each water- ing and wetting place, and by the time Grafton was reached. where the corpse was to change cars for Parkersburg, but few of the mourners d with it, and these were so bewildered ito get in rag ee train, and y corpse went on to Wheeling without From thence by some means it was ‘olumbus, Ohio, the corpse thus hay- wrong State. and the mourners red through Maryland and West nd along the line of the Baltimore, Wilmington and Philadelphia and Camden and Amboy Railroads. By this time the tele- graph was put into excited operation, and various messages were whisked over the wires in various directions in regard to the missing corpse and scattered mourners, making confu- sion doubly confounded for a while. From Grafton an anxious mourner enquired “Where in the d—l is the corpse?” This dispatch was crossed on the road by a loud enquiry from Columbus as to the ownership of a stray corpse arrived there unconsigned. A Baltimore-scattered mourner telegrapbed to “postpone that funeral antul I t there; and the squad of mourners by the Yew York train were sending wildly confused messages to Parkersburg, Grafton, House and Washington, all helping to intensi the prevailing muddle. The corpse meantime bad resumed its travels, and like poor Joe, not being wanted in any locality, had been ‘kept moving on until it arrived at the Little Miani Depot, where it created no little excitement, being without any mark for identification, and foul piay being at oncesuspected. A coroner's inquest was held without throwing any light upon the mystery, which was, however, cleared up bya telegraphic dispatch for the missing corpse. The railway officials then got the corpse in motion eastward and the mourn- ers headed westward and finally after the most eventful history of any corpse or set of mourn- ers on record, Johnny's body was duly com- mitted by them to mother earth, where we trust it may rest in peace. The following letter gives the finale of this curious affair: PArKERSSURG, West Virginia, Dec. 29, 1965. Hi. F._Heckert, Esq., Agent, Cincinnati.—Drarn Sre: The corpse came safely to hand Jast night, by express, and is now in the care of his rela- tives, who had been looking and waiting anx- lously for it since last Thursday, . aie time it should have reached its proper destination. 1 must return "yen the thanks of friends of deceased, and of myself, for your attention im sending it on,and am sorry that it gave you so much trouble. I ‘was informed of its leaving the Relay House bythe man in charge of it, barney ——, the uncle of the deceased, who stated it was ina plain pine box, with rope around it. I mmmediately telegraphed along the road for it and was unable toget any tidings of it. Whee!l- ing reporting to me that it was not there, I sent & special messenger after it, who, unfortunately wenteast from Grafton. ne it might have been returned to Washington. All the time it was laying at Benwood, and no notice sent in regard to it. i was informed by our agent at the Relay House that the man in charge of it was very much intoxicated when he came from Wash- ington, and gave very little attention tothe remains, which | suppose, isa solution of the whole difficulty. They have received the corpse and paid the charges tothe Express Company. regret the publicity which this circumstance has caused, and think it might be proper to give a published statement of facts concening the matter, to correct any false state- ment which might be circulated about it Very respecttully, &c., J. ES AE, WALLACE MEMorIAL Concert.—The article put in yesterday's Evening Star and Intelligencer mm regard tothe Wallace memorial concert was written for the Tribune by a certain Mr. Wat- son, whois a personal enemy of the Messrs. Steinway. Iitisthe same Watson who made such a fiasco with his ladies in a concert in Willard’s Hall some three years ago, and left without paying his bills. All unbiassed New York critics pronounced the Stein way piano in every respect so much superior to the Caicker- ing that a comparison was altogether out ofthe question. Steinway & Sons’ pianos have on all occasions received the first premium over Chickering, whenever and wherever they have come in competition: and even Mr. Grotts- chalk, who for a consideration used the Uhiek- ering pianos in his concerts, wnen compelled to give his honest opinion, on the committee at the ‘World’s Fair, in New York gave it in fayor of the Steinway. At the World’s Fair in London the Steinway pianos received the first premiam and the acknowledgement of superiority over the makers ofthe world. With but one or two exceptions, Steinway’s pianos are used in con- certs in preference to others by all the greatest pianos in this country and Europe. Lastly, the inventions and the improvements of the Messrs. Steinway are imitated by almost all respectable manufacturers in this country. Wx. G. The imprevements consist of a very ordinary Frame House, with one or two small Out-heuses, and a young Orchard of 300 Peach Trees, with other Fruit Trees on the place. From (0 to 60 acres is arable land; the balance is in woed—Pine, Oak and Chestnut. The wood will cut from 2,200 to 3,000 cords, leaving an abundance of wood and rail stuff for the support of the place. The location of this farm, being only 1% miles from the turnpike and 2 miles from the railroad, and acceseable to Washington and Baltimore by both railroad aud turnpike, renders it particularly desirable to any person desiring a permanent home or wishing to speculate in real estate—the wood alone, after deducting expense of cutting and baul- ing, being worth as much or more than is asked for the place.
