The New Orleans Picayune learns from gen- tlemen recently from the interior of the State that the freedmen pativey refuse to make new contracts to work or leave the plantations. This is their reply to the owners of several large plantations where they were comfortabl located and, it was thonght, perfectly contented. Tax Mowror DocTRINE MEETING InN New York«.—The meeting of sympathy for Mexico, Chile, Peru, and St. Domingo, or the Monroe Doctrine Meeting as it was called, was held at Cooper Institute, New York, Saturday evening, and proved a great success. The hall of the institute was crowded, and much enthusiasm was displayed. Speeches were made by the President, W. C. Bryant, Esq., Vice Presidents Theodore Tomlison, x McKenna, the Cl Envoy, and others. Letters expressing strong sympathy with the objects of the meeting were received and read from numerous army, naval and civil officers ofthe government, including, among others, Generals Sickles and Garfield, Speaker Colfax, ofthe House, Congressmen James H. Lane, Jobn A. Kasson, Nesmith, Baker and many others. The meeting adjourned at a late hour, after passing resolutions endorsing the Presi- dent and calling a second mee on the proper notice from the President. Later FROM Mexico.—Official news from the city of Chihuahua up to the 2d of Decem- ber last, has been received here. President Juarez had enteredin hisnew term without any opposition. Only one General had made a protest against the extension of the term, and he went overto the French. General Regules, a very successful officer, has been appointed General-in-chief of the Central Army in place of the lamented General Artega, who was as- sassinated by order of Maximilian. Generals ignacia, Mejia, Epelacio, Nuerto, Nicolas, Regules, Diego, Alvagez and Jos. Carayajal has been promoted to the rank of Majer Gen- erals for patriotic and meritorious services. An unfounded rumor prevailed at Chihuahua that the French would return to that place. Savxe or Lanp in Vincinra.—The Warren- ton (Va.) Indez says:—Mr. Thornton Withers has sold his farm containing 360 acres, near Waterloo, to Mr. Meger, for $30 peracre. Dr. . Fisher has sold a 30 acre lot on the Rap- pabannock turnpike, to Gen. John P. Taylor, of Pennsylvania, for $100 acre; also, a lot 16 acres to Col. Crockford, for $112 per acre. The Virginia Herald also gives the following —A farm of $3}; acres in Essex county, to Major Beekman and Abraham Van Arsdale of New Jersey; a farm of 400 acres, within one mile of Spoteylvania C. Bes sia Bb 5 eect abe Loss of THE STEAMER LiBeRTy.—The agents in this city have received news of the destruction by fire of the steamer Liberty, of the Exprees line het ween this — and Phila- delphia. The fire occurred on Thursday night, between 12 and o'clock, off Cedar Point on the Potomacriver. The vessel wasrun in to the Maryland shore, and barely reached it in time to eave the lives of the crew. The vessel and cargo was & tota! loss, the vessel baving burnt to the water’s edge before the crew left. ‘The crew arrived here last nighten route for Philadelphia.—Alezandria Journal and Firch is posed tbat the fraud committed in the manner described will amount to about $100,000. Mr. Andrew Hunter offered a resolution, which was adop ed, declaring it to be the trae policy of the Winchester and Potomac Rail- road Company to encourage a connection be- tween their read and the Alexandria, Lou- doun and Hampshire Railroad, at some point ator near Harper's Ferry. We learn that it is the purpose cf the new Board to take immediate measures for the com- letion of the road from Stephenson's Depot to Vinchester, and if the application which is now depending before the Legislature for a charter nuthorizing the extension of their road to Strasburg, to & connection with the Manas. sas Gap Road at that point, should be euccess- ful, and it cannot be refused but by an act of flagrant disregard of the interest of the people of the Valley. our people will be placed at once in communication with the cities of Richmond, Alexandria and Baltimore, and with our sister towns of the Upper Valley. FRAUD ON THE REVENUE—An extensive fraud on the Internal Revenue Department has os been brought to light by the authorities of ew York. For some time past they had rea- son to suspect that large quantities of forged cigar box stamps had been uttered, and in or- det to find out and arrest the offenders, active inquiries were instituted. The police officers have succeeded in arresting three persons who are implicated in the charge, namely. y, Jacob Firch and Charles Mitzcheiling and a person named Blomeke, the former a printer doing business at an establishment in City Hall place, ‘and the latter a partner in 4 priating house ta William street. Statements made by Firch and Mitzcheiling led to the apprehension of Blomeke, who has admitted that he printed two thousand five hundred of the counterfeit stamps and declared that he destroyed the plaie from which they were struck off. The assertion as to the destrubtion of the plate turns ou: to be unfounded, as the police have apprebended the party who engraved it.
