E Opp Freie * HALL—Last night of the Peak Family of Swiss Bell Ringers Matinee this afterncon ot iee DeatH or GENERAL WILLIAM Hickey, Cuizy CLeRK or THE Uvyitep States SENATE—At four o'clock yesterday morning, General William Hickey, Chief Clerk of the Senate, died at his residence at Rasevale, near this city. During the last twelve months he complained ot indisposition and weakness, and Spent some weeks at his favorite summer re- sort, Bedford Springs, Pennsylvania, in July and August, for the benefit of his health, but he could not recover his strength. On his re- turn to his post he exhibited characteristic punctuality and interest in the concerns ot bis department; but it was evident that he strnggied against fate. When Congress met on the 4th of December last, he sent word that hetould not be at his post, but hoped a few would enable him to resume it, but his had come, and we are now called to re- his decease. William Hickey was one of dest as he had been one of the most con- fcientious of National officials. He had oc- ecupied other stations, but the best part of his life was spent in the Senate of the Repuplic, having been forty-two years in its service. His work, “The Constitution,” is a standard au- thority, and @ monument of his patience, skill, and conscientious impartiality. At two o'clock yesterday afternoon the clerks of the office of the Secretary of the Senate assembled, and addresses were made upon the subject of Gen. Hickey’s death by Jobn W. Forney and Major Wm. McDonald. The usual resolutions of respect were then adopted, and 2 committee of two appointed to visit the relatives of the deceased, to express the sense of the meeting, and to olfer their ser- vice and condotence, after which the meeting adjourned. The funeral services will take place at St. Aloysius Church, at ten o'clock on Monday morning. CentER MaRkeT To-Day.—Beef, best cuts, Se.; next, L5a2e.; Salt Beet, 5a2ve.; Dried Veal, 25e. Robbins and Crossman, the complainants the suit against the Corporation to restrain the payment of the expenses of the special election recently held in this city, set forth in their bill that they “are and have been citizens and tax- payers of Washington, and that they have an interest in any expenditures on account of said city.” From this one would naturally infer that the expense of the recent election would fail very heavily upon these complainants, owing to the immense amount of taxation to which they are subject. But figures will not lie, and therefore we give below the amount of taxes paid by each of the above-named, as ap- pears from the books in the office of the Collec- tor of Washington city: Lewis Clephane pays $5.40 on realty and 86 On personality, making in all the enormons sum of $11.47. J.H.Crossman pays $22.55 on realty and none on personality. Z.O. Robbins pays Sl2on personal and none on real. Total amount paid by the three complainants, $46.2. Tur Wartack Memortat Concert.—This concert from wihch so much was expected, took place at the Academy of Music 12th of De- cember.- There was a large and highly intel- lectual audie per rerne representing the old- est and most influential families in the city. The concert was excellent inevery respect. It was gotten up under the anspices of the most distinguished musicia piano makers, and music-dealers of New York. After devoting a half page in praise of the concert, the Vew York Tribune, of December 15th, says : “The reputation of the two pianists, Mr. Richard Hoffman and Mr.S. B. Mills, is too bigh and too well known to reed any farther comment than jo say, that they played as fine- ly as usual. e appearance of a Chickering and a Steinway Grand upon the stage excited much attention. They were played apon by performers of equal excellence, but the com- parison was in some respects unfavorable to the Stein way piano, the tone of which, though powerful and in some respects beautiful, lacks very much in refinement, and when forced is quite overpowered? and becomes wiry and harsh. The grand quality, is exquisite in re- finement and sentiment, and will bear enforce- ment without breaking the tone. There are grand points in the Steinway piano, but tacking those we have mentioned, they do not fully meet the needs of a concert player. ee Pcrr THE QuEsTION — Generally to your friends, as to what preparation they use for their teeth. and the response, nine times out of ten, will be, Sozodont. ‘Tis no longer neces- sary to impress its merits upon the public mind, experience has taught the world that, as & means of beautifying and preserving the teeth, invigorating the gums, and giving a pleasant aroma to the breath, it has no rival in either hemisphere. e03 sed illegal Corns, Buntons. FAs FOR SALE, NEAB BELTSVILLE, . ON THE WASHINGTON BRANCH OF THE BALTIMOBE AND OHIO RAILROAD. The undersigned, as attorney fer the owner, will sell at public saie, on the premises, on THGRSDAY, THE 117s par OF JANUARY, at 12 o’clock m., a Farm, containing about 190 ACRES OF LAND. This land is situated ina neighborhood unsur- pasted for health, the soilis of good quality, the place well watered, with a great abundance of wood. The imprevements consist of a very ordinary Frame House, with ons or two small Out-heuses, and a young Orchard of 300 Peach Trees, with other ¥rnit Trees on the place. From £0 to 60 acres is arable land; the balance is in wood—Pine, Oak and Chestnut. The wood will cut from 2,500 to 3,000 cords, leaving an abundance of wood and rail stuff for the support of the piace. The location of this farm, being only 1X miles from the turnpike and 2 miles from the railroad, snd accessable to Washington and Baltimore by both railroad and turnpike, renders it particularly desirable to any person desiring a permanent home or wishing to speculate in real estate—the wood alone, after deducting expense of cutting and baul- ing, being worth as much or more than is asked for the place. Title perfect. Mr. John K. Harrison, living near by, will show the property. For price, terms of sale, &c., apply to Thos. H. Evans, Esq., No. 32 Light st., Baltimore, or to the subscriber.
