[From the Boston Herald. Jan. 1.} ea.e of self-destruction occurred at the South End on Saturday afternoon, which is at least of a melancholy character. Rich’d Owens, the suicide, was a man of some 35 years of age, who followed the avocation of a landscape painter. He arrived in this cityon the 15th ultimo, and represented that ne came from Zanesville, Ohio, where he said he had friends. He obtained employment at Bruce's window- shade store, No. 06 Washington street, at a far remunerative price, showed himself a mast of his profession, and gave unusual satisfac. tion. At that time he appeared to be in ciestitute circumstances, if ascanty garb and an empty pocket denote destitution. But with the pro- ceeds of his labor he improved in spirits and appearance, and produced a favorable im- = ssion upon his employer and his associates. ithin a day ortwo pust, however, he had manifested the appearance of one being more or less under the influence of liqnor, seemed rather more depressed than usual, and talked about killing himself. No one supposed he | Would commit such an act, however, and no particular notice was taken of his remark. On Saturday he requested some money of his employer, which the latter withheld, fear- ing it would be expended for Irquor. In the afternoon Owens went to Starkweather’s gai- lery to have some likenesses of himself taken, and while sitting manifested so much uneasi- ness tbat the artist was compeiled to request him to sit quietly in order that a correct pic- ture might be taken. Owens replied that it Would be “ail right when poor Dick is gone.” Having secured his pictures, Owens returned to Mr. Bruce’s store, and having enclosed some Of them in enyelopes, directed them to various artes. Mr. Bruce questioned him as to his istory, and, in response, he talked quite strangely, saying he had been on the froutier during the war. and had served with the guer. | rilla Mosby; that he was also connected wita Booth in the plot to assassinate President Lin- ecoln, and that he endorsed Booth’s course. Presently he went up stairs, and shortly after Mr. Brace heard the report of a pistol, and, on burrying to the spot he found Owens lying dead upon the floor, and a single barrelled pistol, with which be had shot himself in the forehead, pg by bisside. The affair occurred about > o'clock. No one here haying any knowledge of Owens’ connections or triends,,his body was given in charge ot an undertaker, and will | await for a reasonable time any claim that may be made upon it. Temporary insanity was undoubtedly the immediate se of the act. AxnovT Stamps.—The company contracting ‘With the Government for printing stamps, both revenue and postage, has furnished 400,000,000 of siamps during the year 1565. The largest number ever delivered in one day was 5,92 During the month of March last, 102,' stamps of all denominations were delivered, valued at $3.207,199.50. To meet a demand so vast, the presses are sometimes run night and day, and to avoid error in accounts, a daily balance of the business is struck. The stamps are furnished the Government at 12 cents per thousand. ee FURTHER INTERVENTION CALLED For IN Greece.—In respect to Greece the Malta Times says: We are afraid that the only cure for that unfortunate country is a strong occupation by the combined forces of the three great Powers, and in such a case no one would be hetter qual- ified for the office of Military Regent than Sir Herry Storks. The naval Commander-in- Chieti, Sir Robert Smart, is taking on board stores, s0 as to be ready with his division to Jand an armed force, should such a m re be necessary for the preservation of tranquility im Greece.—Malta (Dec. 9) correspondence of the London Times. “ — Tue Fentan Trovere—The last Fenian conspirator tried at Dublin, Mr. O'Donovan, Roesa,) has been sentenced to penal servitude lor lite. This unusually severe sentence has caused some surprise, and it is evident the man bas been thus punished, not so much for apy offense of which he might have been guilty, as because he chose to conduct his own defense, and, in doing so, was not careful to treat bis judges and the jury with any great respect. GoveRNoR VaNnce.—We are glad to learn that, through the kind offices of Hon. J. Mor- rison Harris, of Haitimore, and of Mr. Speaker | the Colfax, President Johnson has recently en- larged the — of Goy.
