Semmes, the commander of the pirate Ala- bama, has not yet been removed to the Old Capitol, but is confined at the Navy Yard in a Toom adjoining the chapel. The room is in the second story of the building, and is very comfortably furnished, with bed, sofa, and table, and itis also carpeted. The marines at the Yard are charged with his custody. A sentry is constantly on duty at the door of the room, while outside the puilding, under the windows of the room, another sentry is sta- tioned. No one is allowed to speak to or hold intercourse with him except one gentleman, who holds a pass from the Navy Department, understood to be his counsel. He spenas most of his time in reading, having brought with him some of his fayorite books, His meals are brought from a restaurant near by, and paid for by the Government. Under the cir- cumstances |he is quite cheerful, but seems to be anxious that the trial shall take place speedily. THE PUBLIC DEBT. Moore was arrested by officer Weeden, of the Seventh Ward, and taken before Justice Han- dy, when it appeared from the statements of witnesses that Moore and Strong rere playing, and Moore went behind bis bar and took a single-barreled pistol and presented it at Strong.
