[From the Pittsburg Chronicle, Dec. 29.} One of the most important arrests of counter- feiters which has been made in this State was effected in Ene on Monday through the efforts of detectives Cooley and Whitney, of Erie The arrest embraces five of the gang, who were Jocated in New York, and the seizure of $25,000 in counterfeit Treasury notes. For some months past this gang has been doing a thri- ving business, and tbrough their efforts the entire oil regions have been iiterally fleoded with counterfeit money. Detectives Cooley and Whitney determined to discover the where- abouts of the gang, and, if possibie, break it up by capturing the parties and their stock of money. After considerable troubie, the of- ficers ascertained that the gang bad their head- quarters near Buffalo, and at once placed them- selves “in connection with it,” in police par- lance. One of the officers addressed a note by mail to the “chief,” proposing to purchase a considerable quantity of the trash for the par- pore of “shoying” itin the oil region. After some negotiations the terms of sale were set- tled, and the “chief” agreed to deliver the money by exprees at Erie. Either from fear of detection or of the failure of the promised re- mittances for the “stuff,” the + chiet.” whose name is J. W. Sowles, concluded to send the money by Thor. Hale, one of the gang. In due time Hale reached Erie, and immedi- ately upon his arrival he was taken into cus- tody by the detectives and lodged in jail before he had t' me to destroy any of the evidences of his guiltor to communicate with his friends, The detectives then addressed a letter to Sowles, purporting to be written Hale, in- forming him that he (Hale) had been taken suddenly ill, and had been unable todeliver the money. The letter aleo reterred to the impossi- bility of secreting the money Sowles the necessity of his i in Erie to make the delivery oi the money in person. This letter had the decired effect, as Sowles started for Erie on the first train after its receipt. The train on which the «chief had hecagd gute v4 met with an accident, anda number of persovs were injured. He, how- ever, escaped unhurt, and arriyed in Erie after several hours detention. Of course he was immediateig arrested and conveyed to jail to keep Hale company. The letter ruse tay ing proved so snenessful the detectives determined to resort to it again. They accordingly took adyantage of the acei- dent tothe train above referred to, and pro- ceeded atonce to Buffalo. On their arrival there they addressed a etter to the three re. maining members of the gang, purporting have been written by Sowles, in which thi were informed that the “chief” had had bis leg broken by tbe accident to the train, and that he was lying at 2 hotel unable tomove. In ad- dition to this information, the letter demanded the imme: e presence of the three, their prompt reply to the summons being necessary a 4 upon w prevent exposure. The following day the detectives had the satisfaction of meeting their menatt hotel] pamwed, and in a short time af- counterfeiters were safely lodged n the jail at Buffalo, The skill and energy displayed by Messrs Cooley and Whitney in their operation, reftect the highest credit upon them. The result of their operations was the arrest of Sowles and Hale, and three others, whose names we cid not asceriain, and the seizure of $25,000 in counterfeit money. Messrs. Cooley and Whit- hey arrived in this city from Erie last evening, with Sowles and Halé in charge. These pris- oners were committed to the county jail, and Will be tried atthe nextterm of the United States Court in this city. The other members of the gang will be tried at Buffalo, New York. APPLICATION TO GovERNOR FENTON For THE Paxvon or Epwaxp Kercuvm.—Horace Greeley. George Opdyke, David Dudley Field, and William E. Dodge, were in this city a few days since to urge upon Governor Fenton the pardon of young Ketchum. They were forti- fied by letters from Chief Justice Chase and others prominent in national politics. The persons injured by Ketchum, and all the credi- tors concerned (with one exception,) unite, it is ead, in urging & pardon. It is alleged, also, that Ketchum’s testimony is needed in suits in- volving over a million of dollars. and that by his conviction and consequent disqualification as @ Witness much injustice will be done. The “pressure” brought to bear upon the Governor in the matter is very great.—Albany Argus, Dec. we. Braxton, who is recentengaged in making surveys for the Tienentete and Fredericksburg Railroad, informs us that the engineer corps completed their first line from near + Brook's,” in Stafford. to Alexandria, on Saturday evening, the 23d. The Potomac river was “bugged” as closely on this survey as practicable. The route passes by Mount Ver- non. At one point, for several miles, on an elevated plateau, the prospect is charming. The cities of Washington and Alexandria are in the fore-ground, the broad river on the one side, and fertile valleys and high bills on the other. The route is picturesque, and such as to attract the traveler. The distance from Alex- andria to so route is fifty miles—over a less g1 than any other in the State, except, probably, one. engineer corps are to leave Alexandria this morning for the purpose of surveying other rontes, in order bat the best shall be obtained, which is to be located and put under contract at an early day.—Fredericksburg Herald.
