The lady immediately Tan upstairs, and upon entering the bed cham- ber arat jumped off the bed where the infant was asleep. Upon approaching the bed she found the child's left hand badly mangled, where it had been bitten by the rat. Strange to relate, the infant did not even awake until its mother took it into herarms. Mr. Deye- reanx arrived home in a few minutes after. wards and succeeded in killmg the rat. We are informed by the gentleman that this is the second time the child has been attacked by rats. The first time they gnawed the front part of its night-dress completely out. The premises he resides on appears to be infested with ferocious rats; his other childreg have also been bitten on several occasions by the ravenous monsters; that no inducement can be offe: them to go up stairs alone after dark.— ik Post. AroctTTo Lrave.—We are informed that many of the Swedes and Germans who re- cently arrived bere from the North, for the purpose of engaging in tilling the soil, are about “pulling up stakes” with the intention of “pitching their tents” in the far West. They are satisfied with the wages allowed, the salubrity of the climate, but the fare goes very hard with their stomachs. They state that bacon, cabbage, and corn “dodgers” they can- | not stand, and moreover they can’t work on such fare, without milk, butter or fresh meat for a ch: e.
