It would seem now, how- ever, that the reports that reached here yester- day (alluded to in yesterday's Star) were much °° Sxaggerated in regard to the loss of life. It is now stated that the riot originated in an at- tack of drunken ex-Confederate soldiers on the negroes, who from the statement of the Jour- nal, bad also been well supplied with whis- key. and retaliated the assault, and from thence- forward there was a frightfal scene of disorder and bloodshed throughout the day. The Alexandria Journal of yesterday morn- ing gives the following account of the affair: “No cityever presented a greater scene of riet and disorder than did Alexandria yester- day. Whisky flowed in streams from many of our restaurants, and from some it was dealt out liberally to the colored pocene as to the whites. Early in the morning it was observed + by our more quiet citizens thatall the young “reconstructed” gentlemen of the city were Yr" ‘well armed, and the gravest fears were ex- pressed lest & collision should take place be- ee en them and the colored people before the: day was over. These fears were not without t foundation, for rioting commenced at an early hour in the forenoon, and at 1 o'clock p.m. had assumed such fearful proportions that Mayor Ware found it necessary to call upon the mil- e uthorities for assistance to suppress it ambrick, to whom the Mayor made his pints ation, telegraphed Gen. Augur for or- ders, and that gentleman at once telegraphed back to use whatever number of troops was thought necessary to suppress the rioting then s height in the city Three companies of Hancock's veterans were at once ordered out, and proceeded to arrest every one found engaged rioting and disor- deriy conduct. The military did not commence their © oe any too soon—indeed not soon enough—for many persons had been seriously and dangerously wounded before they ap- peared on the scene of action. Notwithstand- ing the Mayor requested of the military au- thorities that all persons engaged in riotous conduct be admonished to go peaceably to their homes, it was found necessary to arrest be- tween fifty and a hundred of the ringleaders of the yarious disturbances then going on through- out the city, who were mostly sent to the slaye pen, where they were compelled to remain juring the balance of the day and night. Some ° ™ were this morning released, while the more guilty are stillin confinement. o many reports were prevalent this morn- ing, of shooting and cold-blooded murders, that any one listening to them would have thought that the darkest and bloodest days or the French revolution had been re-enacted im our midst. But we are happy to be able to ontradict @ majority of the reports which ¢ so freely banded about this forenoon. half of them were true we could not bave the courage to recite them. Some fifty or one hundred colored men were badly beaten, butso far as we have been able to learn but two were so badly injured as to preclude the hope of recovery. One of these was John Anderson, who was shot inthe head, and the her was Robert E. Sanders, who had his tured. Both of them are now d at one o'clock neither of them ted to live longer than a few hours. out adozen persons were arrested and are w in prison charged with complicity in the riot im which these men received their a ing the day & most unprovoked riot is have occurred at Chappell Hall, corner i of Duke and Washington streets, where a num- ber of colored people were holding a party. & white man by the name of Mitchell, who is said to have participated in the riot, was seriously wounded in the head, and at one o'clock this afternoon his death was currently reported. From other sources we have heard that bis injuries were very slight, and that no fears were entertained of serious results from bis wound. The day was one of “fear and trembling” for all quiet and well disposed persons, and had it not been for the interposition of the military orities the worst fears of this portion of community would have beén more than realized. Wethank them for their assistance, and for suppressing what atone time promised to be a most fearful riot. yer ————j—— Boarp or Scuoor Teustges.—Last evening, » ‘&special meeting of the Board of Trustees of the Pablic Schools was held at their room in the City Hall.
