James Thompson, of Brookesyille, on the Mobile and Ohio Railroad, last week mur- dered bis mother, brother, three sisters, and wounded another sister and his father. Some difficulty had occurred respecting the prop- erty of ibe father, which the murderer had en- Geavored to get possession of, and on Sunda‘ morning the young man visited the house wi the design of killing the whole family. He first shot his sister Margaret, as she was in the act of dressing herself. She had one stocking on and another in her hand. The shot took effect tm her right shoulder and side, nearly tearing the arm from the body, and mangling the side most horribly. The mother was heard by her daughter Jemima, who was up stairs. to beg her son most piteously not to shoot; but a sec- ond report followed, and the mother was found dead, shot im the right shoulder and side, on the floor back of the bed. The mother and this derer then entered the room of his brother, Clay, whom he shot in the forehead, killing him instantly. Ciay was also heard by the rls above stairs begging his brother not to shoot him. The two girls up stairs closed and bolted their door, but the murderer as- eended the stairs and forced it open, Jemi- ma slipped by him, rushed down, and was on the threshold of the door. when she was seized by the shoulder and flung back into the room and shot in the back of the head with a pistol. From the direction of the fatal shot she must have been on her knees, begging for her life. The murderer then went up stairs and shot the lastand youngest sister, named Em- ma, in the shoulder and breast. She got under the bed, where he fired two shots at her. She abandoned this position and placed herself be- bind a wardrobe. Hereshe received two shots, one in the side and one in the leftthigh. This youn girl may recover. James then left the ouse and proceeded to the river, where his boat was moored. He met bis father and the sheriff of the county. He aimed deliberately daughter must have died instant] The mur- | feet. Ime: diate possession can be avers to the purchaser, at his father, but the cap snapped. He fired the second barrel, but it was knocked up by & bystander, and passed harmiessiy over the father’shead. He then drew his pistol and fired twice, one shot taking effect in the body of the father, who now clenched the desperado, and after a flerce struggle he was bound. The citizens gathered as soon as the news was spread, and were restrained with great dif- fculty from burning the assassin. He is now im jail at Macon awaiting trial. Bostox Boot axnp SHOE Marker.—The Shee and Leather Reporter says: We are now passing through a quiet season im the boot and shoe market and look for only a limited business until after the advent of the New Year. There area few buyers here who are making sm: ced pacer ges and some orders are being received to sort up with. The pros- pect for the Spring trade, which age open in Senuary, is rather encouraging, aor ote manufacturers have & wholesome 01 tight money market, and will not pie up a large stock of goods until they ascertain the requirements of the trade. Manufacturers are now changing their styles, and ee to supply their ane customers. where many different kinds are manafectured, the Spring and Fall changes in style require considerable care and experience, as the prob- able wants of customers West and South have to be anticipated. Some of the Spri a. new preparing in Lynn and Haver indies’ and gents’ shoes are very Psion os Bert ove abomination, that of imitation buckles, seems to bave had its day. A buekle fastening for shoes isa very ¢ idea, but we do not think quite so much ornamentas formerly will be used on shoes this Spring, s although ecuted, red-shoe-strings, rosettes and oer will un- doubtedly have & great run among the negroes atthe South. Army KeorsTER.—A portion of the War De- partment clerical force is busily cagaged in pre- paring a register of the volunteer force engaged iD suppressing the late rebellion. It willcontain many interesting facts, hitherto not published, and will be a complete and comprehensive pore of deeds of Talor performed by that of the service. Every engagement in which certain regiments participated, and the part ae played im the great drama, will be given. ut only the members of regiments who distinguished themselves, and were awarded medals of honor, will be mentioned in conneclion wit) the register. When com- pleted, it 1s expected the work will consist of Hive volumes covering six hundred pages each. It is pot stated whether it is intended for gene- ral distribution, or merely to complete the | records of the War Deparunent. A Noro JuRny my Mrssor RI —A negro jury was empanneled at Callao, Macon county, in souri, on the 4th instant. A suit for casanitend battery was brought before Squire Hailinger, in which the parties were colored citizens. A jury was Summoned, composed entirely of col- ored men, who, after hearing the evidence and the charge of the court, assessed the fine of twenty-one dollars each, to be paid or reple- vined, amd the case now stands recorded on the docket of the Justice. FREDERICKSBURG AND GORDONSVILL Sree ROAD.—The people of Fredericksbur, sidering the matter of building the ong. pre ro. jected and partly constructed railroad their city to Gordonsville. The company has recently been re-organized, with some of their mostinfivential citizens atits head, and they seem to be determined to make a strong effort to finish the work.— Richmond Dispatch.
