The reports of the ‘Third District show—Number of pupils last Feport, 1,249; transferred, 3. admitted by ticket, 7%; number om roll, 1,250; whole number in attendance, 1,331; applicants, 261. That of the Fourth Pistrict—Number on Inst report, 999; transfrtred, 3. by ticket, 44, number on the roll, 1.42; whole number Yn attendance, 1, 7 it. pplication for teacherships were presented from the follow ing, and referred to the commit- tee on ¢ nination:— Mrs. M. F. Gaither, Misses wek, Rosetta Huntand Abby L. Hall Mr. Wilson, from the committee on the Teachers’ Institute, reported that the lustitute Would meet in the female grammar school, cor- ner 5th and F streets, on Monday, 15th instant, at 2 o'clock p.m.,on which day the schools will be clored at noon. The Institute will be conducted by Prof. Mark Bailey, instructor of elocution in je College, whose subject will be, “Reading.” On Friday night, -%d instant, Prof. Bailey will cive a public readingin Wes- ley Chapel, the use of which has been granted for the purpose by the trustees. The proceeds of the sale of tickets will be appropriated to the library Mr. Wilson spoke very favorably of Prof. Bailey's attainments, and invited the poard to be present. Mr. Brown, from the committee on vocal mu- sic, made a report recommending the use of Dr. Lowell Ms in the sebool« Mr. Rhees ‘introduc ed a resolution Tequest- ing the sub-boards to insure so much of the school furniture in their districts as they shall re desirable; ad Mr. Holmead offered a resolution requesting the Mayortoask the Councils for appropria- tion to bnild a new school house on dg street, between Mand N south, for the accommoda- tion of Primary No. 4 and Secondary No. 3, 4th District; adopted Mr. Holmead stated that the lot and building Were donated by the residents of that locality several years ago to the city, and that the house Was decaying fast. Mr. Stuart offered a resolution calling on the Mayor to nave executed an act to build anew school house in the Third District. Mr. Stuart said that it was a case of absolute necessity, as Miss Ramsey’sschool would have to vacate its en room in January, and the Douse was mfqb needed, as there were 261 ap- plicants for adfhission inte the schools in that district. Mr. Stuart stated that the act pro- vided for the erection of a school house at the corner of 3d streeteast and D street south, on corporation property ayor Wallach staied that in the first place ‘Want of means and in the second prior claims of otber districts had prevented him from hay- ing the law executed. He would be giad to execute the law, but the only way in which it could be done would be for the other districts to withdraw their claims. Mr. Wilson urged the claims of the first dis- trict, Mr. Utermeble of the second and Mr. Holmead of the fourth, and the resolution was rejected. Smithson, bar-keeper at the Monu- mental Restaurant, on Iith street, near C, wes arrested upon a charge of robbing Robert F. Jarboe of $160, on the Monday night previous. ‘The case was ruled for a hearing this morni before Superintendent Richards. At 10 o’cl: = the care was taken up. Mr. J. H. Johnson ap; d for the defense. . Jarboe testified that he went to the Mon- umental House last Monday week, about 4% o'clock p. m., called for ale and drank it; was about to leave and go across the street, when Smitheon avked Lim take & drink; be con- sented, drank,and immediately discovered that the ale tasted strangely. Smithson told him to go in the back room and he would feel better: Jarboe went in, and in a few minutes a woman came in and asked him to treat; be cailed for drinks, Smithson breught the liquors in ona Waiter and gave Jarboe a glass; he drank, and toon he became obiivious, and remembered nothing more until he was sroused by some — Smithson was one of them, who took imand pat himin a hack. He aroused and felt for his pocket-book; found that the strap was off and Lis money gone. He was carried out en the commons, and the hackman there pulled him cut and left him. The amount of money in the pucket-book was $190. but the person who robbed him left him #20 in the book. The girl who came in the room did not stay Over fifteen minutes, and, as far as Jarboe knew, she came of her own accord. The} uperintendent reviewed the testimony, and stated that his opinion was that the pris- oner was concerned with the two who aided in — Jarboe in the hack in the robbery, and eld bim to bail in $500 to appear at court, The cases egainst Emma Clark and Geo. H.
