Fifty of the horses sold at from fifty cents five dollars, and the remaining seventy-five — from fifty to one hundred and twenty- five dollars. A number of mules were sold at $% apiece. The 20th New York deen on proyost duty at surrender of Lee’s army, has been orderea to Norfolk. Johnston and lady is an- yonnese among the arrivals in Rickmondon uesday. Pickpockets swarm along the Richmond, Fredericksburg and Aquia Creek railroad, ma- a sort of rendezvous at Aquia. Tising generation of Richmoné display their appreciation of art and historical memen- toes by stoning the statues of Washington and Henry Clay. Two fingers have been knocked off from the hand of the latter, and both figures are shockingly bruised. Henrico county, Va., is infested by a regu- larly organized band of robbers. GriwtzR.—On Saturday last, Mrs. Grimler, the Pittsburg poisoner, was sentenced to be hung. The Alleghany Times says: “Imme- diately after the Court had pronounced the dread sentence of the law, the prisoner, nerv- img herself for the occasion, and, while tears | were tracing down her cheeks. said: «I have only to go to the bar of God; I have got to go to, toshow my innocence. If it bad not been for Mrs. Caruthers getting things from others than from me, and from none but from me at my house, I would not have been suffering here as Iam. Mr. Ca- Tuthers wanted to take a girl up my statrs, and the trouble grew out of that. They then tried to separate me and my busband, and did all they could to do so. Mrs. Caruthers was a fine woman; Mary Philips was an honor tothe Caruthers’ family. I loved Mrs. Caruthers as I did my own life, and just for that—(here the Tisoner wept bitterly.) I can’t express my feelings. Mrs. Caruthers was too good a wo- man ever togo under the name of Caruthers. She was an honor to the name. She was too good for him.” The prisoner uttered sev other sentences, which were not understood, and then sat down. Her vindictive feelings against Mr. Caruthers, who has been instru- mental in bringing her to justice, are well known, and her insinuations against him had no effect with the court or the spectators. After the . ofa few minutes Judge Ster- rett directed the sheriff to conduct her to her quarters in prison. Josa Brittrycs on Hens.—Josh Billings talks learnedly, as follows: The best time tew sett a hen iz when the hen iz ready. I kant’ tell yon what the best breed iz, but the shang- high iz the meanest. It kosts az much to board one az it duz a stage hoss, and you might az well undertake to fat a fanning mill by running oats thru it. There aint no profit in keepin a hen for his eggs if he laze less than one a day. Hens are very long lived, if tha dont contract the throat diseaze; there iz a great many goes to pot by this melankolly diseaze. 1 Kant tell exactly how tew pick out a good hen, but az a general thing the long eared ones, I kno, are the least apt to scratch up the garden. Eggs packed in equal parts of salt and lime water, ‘with the other end down, will ki from 30 to 40 years, if they ar not disturbed. Fresh beef- stake iz good for hens, I serpose 4 or 5 pounds a day would be awl a hen would need, at first along. Ishall be happee to advise with you at nny time, on the hen question—and take it in eggs. BF The Charlottesville, Va., Chronicle com- plains with great earnestness of the enormous amount of stealing going on in that section. Horse stealing is of daily occurrence, and whatever live stock the farmers have managed to saye—during Federal and Contederate raids —are likely to perish by a horde of ruthless foragers. Hogs are bntchered in the pen and carried. off. Sheep, cows, and calves are killed wherever they are found, and their skins left upon the spot mortifying remnants of departed worth. Corn and meat-houses are “shining marks,” andeyen ploughs standing in the field are not safe, Lovpox Covyty.—A special term of the Circuit Court for Loudon county, Va., will be held in Leesburg, commencing on Monday next. This willbe the first session of this Court which bas been held im this county during the past five years. One hundred and forty eight jurors have been summoned. The Leesburg Mirror of Wednesday says: “Sinclair, who was arrested in this town a few days ago and sent to Winchester by military orders upon the charge of shooting a negro, made his escape from the guard atthe latter place, and is now at large.” &7 The Charleston Courier, in announcing the arrival of General Sickles, now in com- mand of that department, has the following paragraph: “We are free 40 acknowledge our dependence on the strong arm of military pro- tection during this transitory state of our local government. Agencies are at work through- ‘Sut our border, which, unless counteracted by An authoritive organization, will have a ten- dency to jeopardize the lifeof every white per- sen in ourmidst. We believe the presence of Major Gen. Sickles among us to be most time- jy and opportune.” S7 The Norfolk Day Book states that the Board of William and Mary College have con- cluded to appeal to the British nobility and gentry for assistance in the resuscitation ofthat institution. There is reason to believe that the Sppeal will _— with aor gecen Saeed the college was under roy: tronage and sus- tained for a long time by English munificence. S7 There isan excitement in Algeria about the murders, by Arabs, of Fren: colonists. Eight Arabs have been tried by court-martial and executed. &7 During the rebellion forty-six American Whalers were destroyed by rebel pirates, the joes amounting to $1,650,000.
