EVENING STAR. A Painful Diverce Case—Curious Revela- tions in Social Life. In 1653, Peter R. Strong, a wealthy and high- ly respectable gentleman of New York city, married Mary E. Steyens, daughter of Jotn Austin Stevens, president of the Bank of Com- merce, father os family well-known for its wealth and position. having daughters well- known for their beauty and attractiveness. Mr. Strong hada brother, Edward, who had been married, but who was now a widower, and who came to live with his newly-married brother. Edward -was a religious man, a Sun- day school teacher, and apparently a most worthy member of soeiety. “But, as it is now alleged, be fell in love with bis brother’s wife. succeeded in tempting her from the path of rectitude, and for many years lived in the con- stant practice of incest with her. The crime began im the spring of 1960, during all which time this fair religious exterior was worn, and she went daily to the commission of her crime, Protected by & panoply so manifold, that none could say why she commuted it. Even during this time she bore her dead Edith, her dangh- ter, in her arms. Yet, with all these safe- guards, from the spring of 1660 to the holidays of 161, the crime was repeated again and again, and only broken by the departure of Edward tothe army. Herhusband had always deen kind and deyoted, and none could find fault withbim. But a gradual estrangement began to grow up between them. Edward re- turned from the war at the Christmas holiday, and staid a week, and the crime was renewed, ending only when the opportunity ceased. Then it pleased God that the crime should be discovered. She found herself with child, and musthave known that its father was one who stoodto herina relation thatit would make the world shudder to know. Then these three causes came upon her atonce to cause reflect tion and repentance—the departure of Edward, the death of her little daughter Edith, and the premonitions of maternity under such circum- stances. Edith died Jan. 2, 161. She was buried on the 4th, and on the eyening of the next day the child Mary read a chapter in the Bible to her father and mother, and it contained some reference to the duty of affection and kindness to our fellow-creatures. After the children had left the room, the father drew his chair close to his wife, and took her hand and said :-—“I trust the words which we have beard may teach us both to cultivate more fully than we have done of late thatduty which alone can ensure our future happiness.” The wife seemed strongly agitated, and, rising from her chair, she flung herself at his feet and im- fored him to forgive her own indifference. fie told her he was not disposed to judge harshly. and he would forgive all. Her agita- tion seemed to increase, and she cried, “ For- ive me, forgive me! You cannot conceive few guilty 1 have been. If I tell you all, we Must part forever.” And then, to the unutter- able horror of her husband the wretched wife confessed her crime, overwhelming him with shame, aversion, pity and compassion. He ceased from that moment to live with her as his wife. although they occupied the same house. This wretched life was endured for some time, until it became unbearable, when the wife was sent back to her family, and a euit for divorce commenced, which is now pending before the Superior Court, whereby these facts have become public. COLORED PEOPLE IN THE CARS.—On the 2ist inst., at Cincinnati, a suit was decided in favor of leaac Young. a negro, against the street rail- way company of that city, for unlawful eject- ment from the cars. The jury, though instruct- ed by the Court that the damages due a pas- senger who had been thus ejected should onl be compensatory of actual loss or injury, an’ could not bea legal case of exemplary dam- ages, allowed the plaintiff the large sum of $0. Few white men haveever been allowed so sacred a dignity of person that a disparage- ment ofit would cost the offender $500. No Britesh nobleman could have induced an ob- sequious jary of Englishmen to have rated his Lordshbip’s personalty at eo proud a figure in court. ‘The only defence made by the railroad com- pany was tocall Mr. J. M. Doherty, superin- fendent of the road, who testified that the fol- iowing, printed on a card, was a rule of the company OLXCINNATI, April 2, 1562, Office of the Com- pany—To Conductors: Colored persons are to be carried on the cars under the following rule: Women and children inside, and men upon the front platform. J. M. Dorertr, Superintendent. Mr. E. A. Fergnson, counsel for the defense, contended that the company were not respon- sible for any act of the conductor that was out- side the scope of his employment, and urged that, even if the Court sbonid instruct the jury that the plaintiff had the abstract right to ride im the cars, yet looking to the feelings of the community, the objections to social equality, and the repngmance on the part of the white to the colored people. the regulation referred to was proper, and the violation ef the tech- nical might should be visited only with nomi- nal damages. The charge of Jadge Storer was very clear to the point that pe gee would be entitled © compensatory remunerative damages. The jury. on retiring, were found to be uman- imously in favor of a verdict for the plain- ‘it, and after some deliberation agreed on $300 damages. BrRsttnG OF ANOTHER FINANCIAL Brn- BLE.—The New Bedford Mercury has the fol- lowing paragraph:—A man went out to Colo- rado and bought some undeveloped mining property for $*.000. He peturned to the East and sold to a party of gentlemen in a neighbor- ing city, one eighth of his property for $60,000. ‘These purchasers formed a ke putting the property at $500,000, and sold what stocks they could; more than enough at all events to reimburse their outlay. Then the bubble burst; for w investigation the mining property was tound not worth the sum originally paid for it Swirt RetrievtTioy.—On Sunday last John Tilman, a colored man of about twenty years of age.a servant of the tamily of James Beyins, in New York, induced a little girl, a daughter ofsix years, to come and tay with him. The child, eager to be euneecd, followed Tilman intothe basement, where the colored fiend af asap ante crime too horrible to mention. ¢ was immediately arrested, and on Tues- day tried, convicted, and sentenced to the State prison for twenty years. Asthe prisoner ‘was conveyed from the court room, an in- furiated crowd rushed out, and cries of lynch him, lynch him, were freely heard. S7'In the list of two hundred and thirty-two members of the present Congress, sixty-nine were born in New England and forty-seven in the single State of New York, while the re- maining places of nativity are about equally divided between the Middle and Western States of the Union, excepting one born in Canada, one in Bayaria, one in Scotland and two in Ireland. On the score of professions, the law claims a large majority. while printers and newspaper men number no less than fifteen—quite enough to givea good character to that body politic. 7A society has been organized in Lynchburg under the style of the Virginia Central Immi- gration Society. 1t is the design of this society to secure to the people of Virginia a supply of labor of a better class than is thought can be obtained through the ordinary channels; and they intend to send an agent to Scotland and England for the purpose of selecting and for- warding to its members such emigrants as by their industry and intelligence, and by their identity of language and religion, would be peculiarly acceptable to them. ate. Dani ak BN 87” We understaad that a wealth young lady who boarded ata hotel in New York a while last year was warned to leave by the host, on the ground that she was so afraid of soap and water as to bea disgrace to his table.—{ New Bedford Standard. S7 To go from Augasta to Savannah by land, writes a —t correspondent, is a thing that no one should undertake until he has first procured a surgeon’s certificate that be is an able-bodied man. He sbould then get & life insurance, and transmit it at once by ex- press to his wife. S7 Av official analysis shows that it costs the government $500,000 to kill a squaw. S7 During the years 1563 and 1864 there were Over 40,00 commissioned officers in our armies, arenes of one officer toevery 25 men on the rolls. &7 A public meeting has been called in Dan- ville, Pa, to adopt such measures to present before Congress the wants and wishes of the working men in relation to the tariff question. B7' The Philadelphia Presbytery has adopted & resolution denouncing the publication of Sunday newspapers as a desecration of the bbath, and calling on the Christian Public to abetain {yom reading or buying them. S7 Advices from Kansas say the weather has been ©o mild for the past few weeks that peach trees are in bloom in some localities, and that a second growth ef apples are on exhibition at Lawrence. S7 Thus far, but about 5000 cattle have been slaughtered in Chicago tor barreling purposes. At this time Iast year 60,000 head had been packed. a7 The Grand Jury of the United States Court at Detroit have found an indictment against Max Strakosch for making false re- turns of the receipts of bis recent opera season in that city. 87 A negro convict attempted to escape from the Richmond (Va.)
