One of the letters from New York announced that the Daily Era had eight hour fag, and another of subsequent date, thatit had taken itdown. A Baltimore letter stated that the eight hour league were about issuing a call for a convention to be held on the 22d of Feb- ruary, and were taking measures to establish a paper devoted to the interests of the working- men. Peoria, Ill, had just held an ae bour meeting. A letter from Portsmouth, Va.. states that the people there are slow, but the address could not fail todo good. Springfield, Mass., says they are ripe for the movement and had just met m council and appointed delegations to a State Convention. Charlestown, Mass., endorses the address, expresses the opinion that enough of eight hour men have been elect- d to the legislature to pass an eight hour law, which will notamount to much without pub- lic sentimenutto back it. Zanesville, Ohio, ex- presses gratification at the action of "Washing- ton, and wants more addresses, Fitchburg, Mass., is hopeful. Lockbaven, Pa., had received and distributed the address. Taunton, Mass. says the eight- hour league is flourishing. Bloomfleld, IIL, adopted the address. Meadville, Pa, com- mends the address highly, and expresses the hope that the movement will triamph before long. The grand eight-hour league of Boston, Mass., says that there are twenty leagues in the State, and they are receiving applications for charters from some other States. r. A. T. Cavis. from the executive com- Mittee, reported the memorial to Congress, which was placed in the hands of the delegates to obtam signatures. The memorial represents that years of toil have satisfied them that hours per day prectude mental cultivation, & and are satisfied that the mere statement, free from argument, is convincing. They desire a cbange at a period sufficiently future to disem- barrass existing contracts. Mr. Davidson submitted a resolution request- ing the delegates to solicit from their respective tradesmen @ monthly contribution to sustain the movement. Mr. D. stated that over one hundred members of the typographical society had subscribed 25 eepts per month each. Mr. Mattingly stated that all the bookbinders ip the city, ineluding the + peg boys and laborers, subscribed ® like The resolution was amended by inserting 25 céats per month, and adopted. CaLvary Bartisy CuvurcH.—This edifice, which is located on the cornerof H and sth etreets, and which, externally, is rapidly hast- ening to completion, is designed to present a superb specimen of the pure Gothic style of eburch architecture, as developed in the best Period of Gothic art. The size of the edifice on the ground is seventy-five by ninety-five feet. ‘The tower, terminating in an octagonal open- ‘work iron spire, bearing the eruciform flower, & well known Gothic Se is one hundred @nd sixty feet im height. 3] is sixty feet high, rising upon Samcaees Gothic di- Ments, beneath which, acthe lofty elev m of @ hundred feet, the bell, weighing some 4,000 ands, is to be located. The painter, who is doing his work with such excellent taste and fidelity, is Mr. John Davis. The internal architecture and workmanship of this edifice will receive due notice when the rogress of the work shall render it opportu tis contemplated that the edifice will be com- pleted early in December. The cost of the edifice, including the Jot, can- bot, when it is completed and furnished, fall Short of S100.40, 2nd it will not be deemed an improp y to add that the monificent bene- factor.
