EVENING STAR. FROM EUROPE. The Fenian Situation—American Citizens Arrested. é From the foreign files the steamer City 0: ‘Washington we extract @ following: (Duplin (Oct. 28) corsespenaance of the London es. If there is any-virtue i in audacity, the Fenians | Sre determined to have the full benefit of it. I te’ to you yesterday e that Mr. Luby, the reguatesed prowtietor of the Irish People, bad taken un action against Mr. Stronge. the pelice magistrate, for having a war- ramt authorizing the police to enter the office of thet journal and seize upon the plant, together w#h his goods, chattels and papers, including the lease of his house amd his marriage certifi- cate. His counsel was instructed to apply to one of the judges for permission to put certain interrogatories along with the summons and piaint, in order to compel Mr. Stronge to fur- nish evidence against himself. But Mr. Lub; does not stop here; he flies at higher game. have just heard that actions of a similar kind have nm taken against the Lord Lieutenant and the Under Secretary, General Sir Thomas’ Earcom: How the news of this bold stroke ‘Will thrill] the “centres” in America! It is one Way of assaulting Dublin Castle, amd much the most harmless. It will, at least,-have the effect of making the trials highly sensational, and will, no doubt, keep up the flow of funds from the other side of the Atiantic. This morning, between five and six o’clock, a res ‘able looking young man, who gave his name as Lieutenant James Henry Laler, of the %th Connecticut Volunteers, United States, was arrested by Sergeant Devoy, on landin; from the steamship Iron Duke, which arriv: atthe North Wall, from Liverpool. The pris- oner was brought before Mr. O'Donnell, at the Chapel street police office, charged with hay- ang unlawfuily im his possession a seven-bar- relied revolver, two hundred rounds of rifled patent ball cartridges, which are stated to be poi- toned; @ box of patent percussion caps, four military drill boeks, four commissions, bearing the name of James H. Laier, to serve in the Connecticut Rifle Volunteers as Lieutenant and Colonel; also, as described in the charge sheet, with “having in his possession, at the same time and place, the sum of thirty-eight pounds and ten shillings in gold, all supposed for the purpese of Fenianism. and having car- ried the same from America to this country for treasonable purpeses.”’ There were also found with the prisoner several scraps of paper “con- taining the names of persons resident in Eng- land, Ireland, &c;".2 beautifally execated al- bum, containing the photographs of several military officers of the American army:a deeora- tive Maltese cross of silver, suspended by a blue velvet ribbon, the bar at the top being of gold, and having inscribed upon it the name, «James H. Laler” cartridges were made up in packages of six each, the covering being of wood, grooved to fit the cartridge, and bound round with paper. The packages showed a conical ball at one end and the paper casing containing the powder at the other. Upom the Ussue paper appears the following inscription: “Six combustible envelope cartridges, made of Hazzard powder, prety for Colonel Ceit’s patent revolver pistol. Address to Colt’s Cart- ridge Works, Hartford, United States of Amer- ica.” The accused, who is twenty-two years of age, stated that he had been in America from the time he was ten years of age: that he served in the American war, and returned to this country to see his uncle, who resides in Thomas street, and intended shortly to retarn to the country of his adoption. He evidently - peared much surprised at the whole proces ing. Mr. O’Donuejl remanded the prisoner pending further inquiries. When the Trafalgar ergs from Liver- pool, arrived at the North ali yesterdey morning, & search was instituted by the police to ascertain if any of the passengers on board had arms or documents in their ssession which would implicate them in the Fenian conspiracy. Among them was an elderly man named Owen Smith, who, in reply to Ser’gt Devoy, stoutly denied that he had any such in his possession. A search having been insti- tuted, there were found concealed on his per- soutwo loaded revelyers, some chain shot, two glass bottles filled with bullets, a quanti- ty of percussion caps and £66 in gold. The sergeant arrested him and bronght him to Chapel street police office, where the prisoner informed Mr. McDermott that the several ar- ticles foundom him helonged to his son, who had been 4 soldier in tne United States army, and that he was about to return te his native ‘e, Cavan, from America, where he had re- sided for ten years. He was remanded for further investigation, but discharged this morn- ing on entering into his own recognizances to appear when called on. jaltimere Markets, November 14. The market baving been largely oversold a combination of speculators was formed, and they purchase all the “spot wheat” offered, and thus forced tbe market up, compelling short sellers to set- tle at the advance figures. When the receipts are light, as they have been for a week past, this can easily be done, but when they are heavy itis rather a difficult and hazardous uodertaking to work up a “corner.” It is Glees to state that the whole business is ille- gitumate and disgraceful; but it is one of the concormitants of a depreciated and over abun- Gant currency. Merchants have been changed into inere speculators and gamblers by it, and it bas disturbed and damaged the business of the entire country.” = <=0: ST are Boston Boot anp Suek MARKET.—Trade continues quiet for new purchases, and bat few buyers are in the market. There is some de- mand for seasonable goods to fill up assort- ments, and a fair amount of boots and shoes for the season have been forwarded to the prin- cipal cities of the Union the past week. The accumulation of stock is not so rapid as to in- fluence prices for the present. @ general thing more care is taken to put into the market & better class of goods than formerly; the present mode of manufacturing by “teams” en- bling the manufacturer to give more unifor- mity in workmanship and regularity in sizes than has heretofore been attained, which isa very desirable feature to the jobpers and re- tailers, and the use of distinguishing trade marks, now fo much In vogue, enables “.e dis- tant buyers to order with more confidence of receiving just the right kinds to keep their as- sortmentin good order for sales.—Shoe and Leather Reporter. A New Devee—ingenious ex dients are resorted to every day by professional thieves to enable them successfully to commit depre- dations. The latest dodge is the arrest of the female head ofa family in theabsence of her husband and other members of .t; and her re- moval under @ bogus warrant. As soon as she bes been taken away from her house, an ac. complice enters and plunders it.
