EVENING STAR. | ‘WwW. D. WALLACH, Editer and Proprieter. WASHINGTON CITY: WEDNESDAY....NOVEMBER 15, 1965. SPREADING MATTER ON EVERY PAGH. SEE OUTSIDE FOR INTERESTING TELE- GRAPHIC AND OTHER MATTER. TH Stan ty BALTIMORE.—Persons in Bal- timore desirous of obtaining the Star can do | so byapplying to Mr. Fred. Polymer, No.3 / south Gay street. _—~+ore-—______ DEATH OF PRESTON KING. On Monday, the resignation of Hon Preston King, as Collector of the port of New York, ‘was announced here, and to-day the telegraph brings the intelligence of his death by jumping from a New York ferry-boat, while in a state oftemporary insanity. Mr. King was oncea victim to this terrible affliction, and recently he bad shown indications of a softening of the brain, induced, no doubt, by the perplexities and cares of the New York Custom House. j He was born at Ogdensbarg, St. Lawrence Uo., | N.Y. Oct. 14, 1506. He graduated at Union College, and was a lawyer by profession. For several years he was a member of the New York Legislature, and also a Representative from that State irom 1834 to 1847, and from 1819 | to 1663. Afterwards he was elected to the U. S. Semate, in that body serving as Chairman of the Committee on Revolutionary Pensions. He | was also a delegate to the Convention of the National Union party that met in Baltimore iast year, bei Jhairman of the Committee on Resolutions. He was one of President John- son's most intimate friends, and since the death | of tbe late President, Mr. Lincoin, had been a | member of the Executive household for a con- | siderable portion of the time. SEORETARY OF LEGATION. Col. W. A. Browning, private secretary to the President, has been appointed Secretary of Legation to Mexico. Col. Robert Johnson, son of the President, succeeds Col. Browning as private secretary. | Personal.—Hon. William A. Darling. (who beat Fernando Wood for Congress,) who, for aeleyen years, has presided so successfully over the affairs of the flourishing Third Avenue railroad, New York city, has resigned on ac- count of ill-health and the pressure of Con- gressional duties. The beard of directors have voted him the snug little sum of $5,000as a souvenir “in consideration of his long and ex- traordinary service.” SF We have received the Dorchesier News, a bandsomely printed, well-filled weekly paper, published at Cambridge, Maryland, by E. L. Kerr. Tre Marye Invasion —The reports tele- gTaphed yesterday of a threatened rupture with the Canadian authorities from the invasion of Maine by a squad of British Marines after de- serters, has received no confirmation at the War Department. A Hartford paper of Mon- day says: Company B, Sth regiment Hancock's corps, commanded by Captain De Mott, left this city for Augusta, Meine, on the Sunday night mail train, under orders to report _to the chief mustering officer at that city. From tnis a large story has grown that an officer of her Majesty’s marines marched his company across the border to arrest deserters, that they refused to obey his orders on neutral soil, that he ap- plied to the authorities for the rendition of his soldiers, which demand was refused, and that the whole of Hancock's corps has been ordered to rendezvons on the border. A pretty sensation to grow out of the fact that one com- pany of that corps has been ordered to Maine as a guard for the chief mustering officer. The company at New Haven sand another one at Providence have not been ordered away. Slim cbance that for a foreign war. S7-Diamonds are now used in boring arte- sian wells with great success. The Daily News says his speech at Glasgow leaves no doubt i i the course Ministers will pursue if supported by the country. They will not be slow to complete the work of reform. Mr. Gladstone has already declared himself te be in favor of the extension of suffrage, and in view of this, the Liberal party have designated him as the leader of the Commons. What doubt can remain of the true wishes ofa party which selects such a man for its acknowledged lead- er. The Heraid thinks no understanding has been arrived at concerning a reform. The London correspondent of the Manches- ter Guardian says notwithstanding the tone of Mr. Seward’s speech at Auburn it is generally understood that the President's Cabinet has no intention of pressing toa quarrel the contro- yersy regarding the Alabama claims. THE WHITE HOUSE There was a large number of visitors at the Executive Mansion to-day. Col. Rob't John- son, son of the President, has entered upon his duties as private secretary, Col. Browning, as announced elsewhere, having received a for- eign appointment. The office of the priryate secretary isan institution of itself. Previous to the war there was but asingle desk in the apartment. Now there are four, each of which has more business than the single one of four years ago. The labors of the office commence atan early honr, and are continued each day until late in the evening. All visitors who seek an interview with the President, with the exeeption of the crowd which awaits the pnb- lic reception, first announce themselyes to the private secretary, who generally informs them whether they cam be received. Official cor- respondence is opened and arranged by him for the President's examination, and a great number of cases disposed of by him without annoying the President with their details. The Secretary is assisted by Colonel Wright Rives, Major Long, and Major Mor- row, each of whom has a particular line of duty. From ten till three each day the Secre- tary’s office is beset by officers of every rank, civiland military, politicians, prominent rebels after pardons, &c., who, failing to obtain an interview with the President, pour into the tortured ear of his Secretary the recital of their gtiefs and wants. Colonel Johnson is admi- rably qualified for the arduous and responsible duties of this post. Courteous in manner, quick of apprehension, and expeditious in the transaction of business, none haying official or otber relations with him ever bear unpleasant recollections of an interview, or feel that their in‘erests suffer from inattention. THE REPORTED DEATH OF COLLECTOR KING. We believe that nothing has been received to-day by the Government trom New York, confirming the reported suicide ef Preston King, Collector of the Port of New York, though quite a mob of lobbyers for successors to him have already reached here. There seems to be no doubt of his death, but it is probable that his successor will not be ap- pointed for some Sere In the meantime the Assistant Collector will perform the duties of the Office in accordance with the following instructions issued by Sec- retary McCalloch : REASURY DEPARTMENT, Nov. 15, 165. C. P. Clinch, Esq., Assistant Collector and Spe- cial Deputy, Custom House, New York - Sin :—Your letter informing me of Collector King’s supposed death is received. In this event you will proceed and perform the duties of Collector, under the 22d section ot the act of March 2, 1779, until otherwise ordered. H. McCuttocu, Secretary of the Treasury. MUSTERED OUT. The enlisted men forming the following com- panies and regiments of the Veteran Reserve Corps, baying expressed their desire to be dis- charged, as provided by General Orders No. 155, Adjutant General's office, dated Oct. 26, 1:65, were yesterday mustered out of the ser- vice by Brevet Major W. ENGAGING ROOMS In view of the exorbitant prices charged for rooms and board in Washington, quite a num- ber of members of Congress are engaging rooms in Baltimore, where they can obtain accommo- dations on more reasonable terms they say. They have engaged commutation tickets on the railroad, and will leaye Washington every evening, returning in the morning, to be pre- cent at the sessions of the House. GENERAL SANBORN. Major General J. B. Sanborn, who is now in the city, will leave here in a few days for the Indian Nation. under instructions trom the Secretary of the Interior to settle upon some Policy between the Indians and the Govern- ment relative to the slaves liberated by them under the recent treaties, pntneniediiatis: ar SOUTH CAROLINA DIRECT TAX. The Secretary of the Treasury has replied to the Governor of South Carolina, who made application to assume the direct tax provided by act of Congress and pay the same in State bounds. The Secretary answers that he has no power to grant the request under existing laws. 2 RMS de ast aay MINISTER TO MEXICO. Major General John A. TELEGRAPHIC NEWS. —_—_—— FEMALE PARDON BROKER IN TROUBLE.—In the Criminal Court proceedings of Monday's Siar it was stated that affidavits had been made there by Joseph R. Cobb and Lucy L, Cobb, Mr. Cobb charging that on the night of the 8th of November one Lafayette C. Baker and J. R. Spears did with force and arms, without warrant, arrest and ig on him, and P omy 3 im in Joniously take him a letter addressed by Clarence J. Howell to Wm. H. Seward, Secre- ? vit charges that the parties mentioned arrested and imprisoned her, and forcibly and feloni- ously took from her four Treasury notes. each of the value of fifty dollars. A curious history is connected with this case, and when the facts come ont there will be some rich developments. The — in the case is pretty well known hereabout as the “female ‘don-broker,” and it is stated that she has remarkably successful in her vocation, She is quite attractive in personal a: rance, of slight graceful figure, iustrous Bhack eyes, and raven hair, in most luxuriant and elaborate style of frizzie known to moderp fashion, Most visitors at the White House remember haying seen her about the ante- rooms, usually holding in her hand a business- like roll of papers. Others will remember ber by her en name of Miss Lucy Randolph, as the proprietress of the little cigar stand ad- joining the Kirkwood House. A number of pardon-brokers and claim agents having brought business down to such a point that it became notorious that money was being paid for the procurement of pardons, and for other causes needing official assistance, the at- tention of General Baker, Chief Detective, was called to the fact by a pardon being thrust into his face by a notorious rebel bridge-buarner, who was also deeply involved in certarn cone spiracies; on investigation he found a female pardon-broker, named Mrs. Cobb, had pro- cured it tor the sum of two hundred dollars, and had taken 8 receipt for its payment. One of his detectives was sent to her, and ; under an assumed name got & pardon for the sum of two hundred dollars, im thirty-six hours, without said detective baving taken an amnesty oath. On the last money being paid she was invited to headquarters, where she was finally released on making certain disclo- sures. 1t has been stated that the Grand Ju had formed four indictments against Gene Eaker and Mr. Spear on the charges of Mr. and Mrs. Cobb, but we believe that no such action bas as yet been taken by the Grand Jury. The evidence on the trial, should one take place, will probably farnish a rich expose of he manner in which the pardon-brokeraze business bas been carried on. eae MFETING OF THE Granp CuartEr oF Ma- 80NS.—Monday evening, the annual meeting of the Grand Chapter of Masons of the State of Maryland and the District of Columbia was held at Masonic Hail, 9h and D streets, at which the various subordinate chanters in the jurisdiction were well represented, and the proceedings very harmonious. These reports of the sanitary police do not include those for which the General Government and the city author- ities are responsible, which at the beginning of the sanitary investigations were found to be quite numerous. but have been abated. A large majority of the citizens abate the nuisances reported upon their premises as soon as notified; some stubbern ones await the service of war- rants and pay the costs of a Corporation case as well as that of the abatement. —_—_——_ SwInDLinG.— Yesterday, officer Stinchcomb arrested Henry Watson, colored, on the com- Plaint of swindling Mrs. Johnson out of a $50 note.
