A most pleasant enter:ainment, ~~ Trvstexs OF PUBLIC ScHooLs.—The regu- lar monthly meeting of the Board of Trastees of Public Schools was held in their room in theUity Hail last evening, Mayor Wallach in the chair. Mr. Holmenad presented a communication ] from Mr.George Howell, and one from Mr. Wilson, asking permission te use two school rooms in the Fourth District for night schools. Mr. Wilson moved to lay the communica- tions on the table, as it had been settled last year that the trustees had no power in the premises. All such applications should prop- erly be made to the City Councils; which mo- tion prevailed. Reports from the districts being in order, the report of the Second District showed the number of pupils, male and female, to be 1,064; pumber of applicants waiting admission, 107, nrmber of pupils present every session, 2; nuwber with no demerit marks, 159: visits of trustees, 71 No abstracts wi pre received from the other alleged that the fanlt was who either failed to make sintime or had made incomplete rey ; and after some conversational debate, m order to remedy this matter, the treasurer Was instructed not to pay the bills of teachers unless the report had been made. T. M. Wilson, 2d district, 30 scholars. W. M McCathran, 3d district, 16 scholars. J. E. Thompson, 4th district, 10 scholars. Mr. Holmead nominated Dr. F. S. Walsh fer Vice President of the Board, and he was unane imously elected Dr. Walsh, trom the committee appointed for that purpose, reported that in compliance with the instructions of the Board, he had Written a letter to Messrs. Charles R. Coburn and L. Van Bokklen, in answer to their circu. lar of August 2d. relative to the holding of a teachers’ convention in this city in February, 1-66. Dr. Walsh stated that representatives of the Board of Trustees would meet with the superintendents and participate in the doings of the session. The committee on Text-books was instructed to prepare a new manual of rules; and then, on moton, the Board adjourned. —_¢———— REOPENING O¥ THE SzaTON Hovse.—This superb hotel, built on so liberal ascale of expen- diture by John H. Semmes, Esq., bas been en- tirely refitted, and was reopened Monday night by the new lessees, Messrs. John T. Brodhead and E. E. Gilbert, gentlemen of known enter. prise and energy, and abundantly able to “keep a hotel.” Very extensive alterations and im- provements have been made, bringing into requisition the labors of some of our best me- chanics, the wood work being by Bird & Baker, brick work by Cassell & Shaw, painting, &c.. by J.T. Cassell, plumbing by os. Thomp- on, paper harcing by Bishop & Alexander, stone work by Acker, and iron work by Mead. A fine billiard room takes the place of the office on Louisiana avenue, and the bar-room has been changed to the C street front to make room for the office. Adjoining the billiard room is & wash-room, with marble basins and the luxurious appliances of hot and cold water. ‘The reading-room has been transferred also to the C street fro: The bar-room is 4 spacious apartment, some fifty feet square. and with fifteen feet ceilings. ‘The main partor, one of the finest rooms of the kind in the country, has an exceedingly rich set of farniture by Kirby; and the diming-room, near by, has been admi- rably fitted up. The carving-room adjoining, with its bright furniture and cozy apparatas for tea, coffee, egg boiling, &c., is & worthy ¥is-a-vis to the handsome dining-room: and the culmary department below (presided over by John A. Edmondson, of Philadelphia, one of the best cooks in the country.) isin the same apple-pie order of brightness, neatness and convenience. Qutside of kitchens, baking- rooms, store-rooms, &e., are the remarkably ext nsive vaults of the Seaton House, which, running under C street on one side and nearly ty the muddle of Louisiana ayenue on the other, increase the capacity for storage purposes of the hotel to an indefinite extent. Serious Avrray.—On Sunday afternoon, the 6th regiment of Hancock’s Corps, marched into quarters at East Capitol Barracks, where the Sth regiment was already in quarters, hay- ing relieved the Veteran Reserves, which were stationed there. Hardiy had the new comers been assigned quarters before an officer of the 6th ordered the goods of L. S. Smith, the sutlet of the Sth, to be removed, and threatened to call in his men and clear them out. Mr. Smith went to see the Colonel in reference to the matter, m the meantime his clerks packing up the goods and taking them out. Mr. Smith, on returning, took a hatchet and was in the act of taking alock from the door, when the officer referred to jerked the weapon from Smith and attempted lo cut him, and the two clinched, when the officer called for help, which brought a number of soldiers to the place, and they at once attacked Mr. Smith, beating him sense- less, one of the men striking him on the head with heavy club. Mr. Smith was carried to A residence near by where he is attended by Drs. Hines and McMillan, who on Sunday night had but little hopes of his recovery, but he is now somewhat better. — CITY ITEMS. oe T. M. Harvey to-day received by steamer from New York his new machinery for roast- ing oysters, and is having it put up in his es- tablishment, corner of Cand 11th street.
