At the examination of Dr. Maddox, the common- wealth’s attorney having stated that he could adduce important testimony from a witness named Russell, of Boston, now stopping in Washington, the justice consented to continue the ease till to-day at 11 o'clock, and Dr. Mad- dox was accordingly ordered to be committed to jail until that time. Upon this the counsel for the prisoner sued out immediately a writ of habeas corpus, before Judge E. K. Snead, and Dr. Maddox was brought before him, be- fore he had been taken to jail. After consider- able argument of the counsel on both sides as to the power of the jndge to take bail for Dr. M.’s appearance before the justice, and the 5 baving decided that he fad such power, ir. M. M. Lewis was examined on behalf of the prisoner, to show the condition of the fam- ily. Dr. L. testified that the wife of Dr. M. is in 8 situation to render it probable that excite- ment would produce dangerous consequences, and that such excitement would be likely to result from the imprisonment of the doctor. Judge Snead, upon hearing the case, admit- ted Dr. Maddox to bail in the sum of $5,000, for bis appearance before Justice Beach to-day. - True Granp Lover, I. O. O. F., held its annual communication last night, a large num- ber being in at endance. The Board of Trus- tees of Odd Fellows’ Hall also submitted their Annual report, embodying a statement that the Board bad declared a dividend of six per cent. upon the stock held by Lodges and Encamp- Ments, leaving a large surplus on hand. After the transaction of routine business, the Grand Lodge elected the following to serve as officers for the ensuing year :—William J. Brown. M. W. Grand Master; John T. Given, R. W. Dep- uty Grand Master; Byron A. Kidder, R. W. Grand Warden; Parker H. Sweet, R. W.Grand Secretary; Samuel Wise, R. W. Grand Treas- urer. John F. Hughes, onroe, Clarke, Slye and others, for robbing Mr. Timothy Finnegan of wearing apparel and house furniture. Justice John Lee issued a search wartant Spear and a part of the goods were found in Coleman's house in Mur- der Bay.
