THE WINoosKI AND ALGonquiIn TRIAL.— Chief Engineers Darby, Fitaian and Kelloze have made & report to the Navy Department of the late competitive trial of the machinwry of the Winooski and Algonquin, to determine the economy of fuel with which the power was re- spectively developed in the two cases. They fay the trial was couducted in exact conformity With the instruction of the Board of Civilian Experts, and that the Winooski’s machiuery made the ninety-six hour ran working ia the most perfect manner, and steadily improving, giving a better result for the last twelye hours than for the first. Herald, 11 #2 From some étaiistics made up at the War Department of the casualties to our general of- ficers during the war, itappears that we had eight major generals and seyenteen brigadier fenerals killed outright in battle, while two major generals and nine brigadier generais died of wounds received in action, and seven- teen genera!s of the two ranks died of disease. In the yesr 1962 our lorses of general officers in battle were very heayy, numbering no less than fifteen, while during the present year, or from the end of 1664 io the close of the war, we lost but one general, though the fighting was great and decisive.
