A rare entertainment may be expected. eee An ATTEevrT To Poison A Girt Ix Hooxer’s Division —Last night, about 9:20 O'clock, detective Bigley, with officers Hol- brook and Hudson, arrested a man named Albert Wing, in Heard’s restaurant, D, between 13th and 134, streets, upon a charge of attempt- ing to poison a girl named Susan Young, alias Dutch Frenchy, and Philip McCue and Hattie Young as accessories. ‘he poison adminis ~ tered was laudanum, in 4 glass of whisky, and ‘was taken between 7 and So’clock. The girl ‘was found lying on her bed, and her stupid condition alarmed the inmates of the house, who notified officers Holbrook and Hudson. Dr. Phillips was sent for, who administered proper remedies, and the girl was restored by vomiting the poison. This morning the parties bad a bearing before Justice Bates, at the Second Ward station-house. Itappesred in evidence that Susan Young lives on D, between 13th and 13% streets, and between 7 and § o'clock was in Toning’s res- taurant, next door tu her house, and met Wing there. Wing went with her to her room, and he proposed to have drinks, and sent for them. The door was locked, and after taking the drinks Wing left the house by getting out of the window. She did not gnow that there was Isudanum im the liquor. It was brought to the house by a colored boy. Wing took it in the window. They did not drink directly. Wing gave the boy some money and proposed to let the liquor siand awhile.” When the boy r.. rned they drank the liquor. She bad only known Wing since Saturday night. She knows Hattie Young, who does not live in the same house with her, and who was not at the house when the affair occurred. Edgar St. John, bar-keeper at the restau- rant, called the “Unknown,” second door from Susan Young's, testified that the colored boy came to the bar and asked for two glasses of whisky, saying that «Frenchy sent tor them.” He gave the boy the liquor, the same as usual- ly sold, and told him to bring the tumblers back when done with them. Frank Williams, colored, thirteen years old, sworn:—Testified that after dark he was on the opposite side of the street; Wing came tothe Window and asked if there was a boy about, and be answered him. Wing sent him for the whisky, and took it in through the window. Wing then gave him twenty-five cents and a vial, and told himto get twenty-five cents worth of laudanum. He went to the drug store (said to be Entwisie’s) and got it; the vial Was mostinli. Wing took it in through the window and shut the blinds. The witness knew Wing, having blacked his boots several times. © evidence against Wing having closed, McCue was allowed to state that at 5 or 5 o'clock he was in Tonnig’s, and the complainant was there. She had a bottle like the one which contained the laundarnum, and ran up stairs, saying she was going to kill herself. Officer Holbrook stated that there is evidence to show that McCue knew all about the affair; that when Wing and Susanna Young were the room, M » with two others, was out- side the door, went to the door and called Wing, who replied that he would be out di- rectly. Also, that when he (Holbrook) and Hudson went to Heard’s restaurant in search of Wing, Hattie Young, the ether accused party, was there. Detective Bigley was in citizen's dress, and Hattie Young did not recognize him; but when Holbrook entered, Hattie Young ‘went to Wing and told him that the police were after bim for poisoning Frenchy. Holbrook asked Hattie for a description of Wing, and she gave him a description that threw the officer off the trail for some time. Justice Bates decided to commit Wing to jail for court as principal, and McCue and Hattie Young as accessories. Wing is from New York, and is a discharged soldier. McCue isa non-resident; and Hattie Young also is of the stock imported to this city to colonize Hooker's Division. —— Tax Cotrorep BurGiars FULLY Committrep For Covurt.—Yesterday afternoon, the gang arrested on Monday by Sergeant Eekloff and officers Kelly, McColgan, and Coomes, on the charge being concerned in many rob- beries and burglaries, consisting of the follow- ing: John Williams, Thomas Foster, Frank Brown, Joseph Carter, Mathew Hall alias Geo. Wilkes, Judson Harris, John A. King, John Stewart, Richard Smith, and Jenette Carter for receiving stolen goods, Olivia Norris and Lizzie Stewart as witnesses, were brought out before Justice Walter for a final examination. Previously, Messrs. Hoover, M. H. Prince, Newmyer, near the Park, and Henry Peterson bad identified some of the goods as haying been taken from their places. At the examination, W. F. Seymour, of 132 Bridge street. Georgetown, identified a lot of shirts, suspenders, neckties, handkerchiefs, &c., which were taken from his store on Sun- day week. G. A. Kohler testified that Foster was one of the parties with Williams when the latter was arrested for stealing boots. Alex. Shaw, a colored shoemaker, identified several pairs of boots taken from his shop when he was robbed of nine pairs. Joseph L. Schnei- der, an old soldier, identified Foster as haying robbed him of a watch on the Island. Mr. Newmyer found a pair of his boots on one of the peesweze. The justice committed the party to jail to answer at court. Sergeant Eckloff, after the final commitment of the parties acting on information, made a further search in the neighborhood of Jenette Carter's house, where the party had their headquarters, and succeeded in finding about twenty large keys, most of them such as are used for store Jocks. The parties now stand committed in eight separate cases. a paaiaren Cask or Forcis_z DeTarner.—Before Jno. H. Jobnson, Esq. Hugh Tuoy vs. John Hogan.— This was a proceeding to recover the eS- sion of lots No. 23, 24 and 25, in square ‘Ro. 905. The testimony showed that Hogan rented the Jots from one Henderson, the then owner, some seven years ago, paying him some seventy dol- lars at the ume for and upon account of rents of the lots, and that there was no agreement as to the duration of the tenancy, and that some ‘bree years afterwards, Henderson admitted that Hogan was the tenant of the lots, and that Hogan bad the lots enclosed and under culti- vation for the last several years, and that a short time before the action was brought, ‘Tuoy bought the lots and received a deed from Henderson, and that after he acquired title to the property, be asked Hogan to surrender the possession, which he refused. ‘The counsel for Hogan maintained that to sustain the action for forcible detainer, it was necessary to prove that the defendant “unlaw- fully and violently kept possession of tne lots with menaces. force, and arms, and without the authority of law,” and that as there was no evidence that any “force, violence or menace” had been used on the part of the defexdant, bot simply a refusal on his part to quit and surrender the possession, the action could not be maintained: and furthermore that the testi- mony aforesaid, showed the defendant to be Jawtully in possession as & yearly tenant, and that being so lawfully in possession, he would be justified by the law of God and man, in the employment of just as much force 8s might be necessary to enable him to detain the possession against all the world, until the determination of his tenancy by six months’ notice, and s judgment, founded thereon, against him for the possession. The Justice reserved bis decision. Mr.Tuoy for plaintiff. M. Thompson for Hogan. i Masonic Greanp Lopoxr.—The following brethren have been elected officers of the Grand Lodge for the ensummg Masonic year: George C. Whiting, Grand Master: R. B. [t was the execution of a bet on the result of the New York election, whereby the loser was to wheel the winaer from the Treasury Building to the Capitol. The sympathies of the spectators seemed to be needed for the winner, he being evidently unused to public wheel-barrowing, and knowing not what to do with his legs. Either by design or inadvertence on the part of bis adversary, the barrow also seemed to en- counter all the big ruts to be found on the way. ae ASSAULT AND Battery Cases.—Yesterday, Robert Albertson was arrested by officer Hill for axeavlting John Sheridan, aad Justice Wal- ter committed him to jail.
