THE WIRZ TRIAL, The court-room was crowded to-day with spectators, including many ladies, attracted to hear the argument of the Judge Advocate, Col. Chipman, for the prosecution. The prisoner is still quite feeble, and reclined upon a sofa, listening intently to the proceedings. The ar- gument is aed d lengthy, embracing several hundred pages legal cap. and will probably not be concluded to-day. The Judge Advocate divided his argument into four subdivisions, noticing first the legal objections to the jurisdiction of the Court; sec- ond, analyzing the testimony; third, examining the charge alleging conspiracy, and showing its extent and the criminality of each consp: ator; and fourth, showing the guilt of the pris- oner before the Court. The arguments in proof of the authority of the President to convene military commissions to try civilians for of- fences incident to and growing out of a state of war, were similar to those presented in the conspiracy trial, and which are familiar to the Star's readers. In the elaborate review of the testimony, the Judge Advocate indicates that the charge of conspiracy to murder our priseners is fully proved. The efforis and expense of the Gov- ernment in procuring witnesses for the detense are cited to snow the desire on the part of the authorities to afford the accused eyery oppor- tunity to prove their innocence. Every sub- peenaasked for by the Cefense had been granted, with the exception of a few rebel function~ aries. The review of the evidence, it is expected, will occupy all of to-day, and presents a record of horrors almost incredible. Some of the details were so shocking as to cause ladies to withdraw from the court-room. A. H. STEPHENS, Alexander H. Stephens, ex-rebel Vice Presi- dent. who was recently released from Fort Pulaski, and his brother, Linton Stephens, arrived here last evening at six o'clock, from New York, and took rooms at Willards’. The announcement in the Star of yesterday anticipating the arrival of the ex-rebel Vice President, had the effect of drawing a large crowd of persons to the hotel who were anxious to get a view of him. As soon as his arrival was known, those in waiting moved towards the door of the hotel, and as Mr. Stephens entered he was immediately reeognized by mauy who had frequently seen him on the streets of Washington and in Congress. He has altered but little in his personal appear. ance, his frame being upright and emaciated, as heretofore. Mr. Stephens appears to weigh but little over one hundred pounds. and as 2 ascended the steps of the hocel he stooped and moved along slowly, as if weak and worn out by the anxieties of the past few years. His hair is a little thirmerand grayer than when he was here before. He was dressed in 4 well- fitting black suit of clothes. Daring last night Mr. Stephens was waited upon by several of his old Washington triends, whom he received in his room at the hotel. coeals Hooker aud Terry also called to see him. A little after nine o'clock this morning Mr. Stephens proceeded to the White House, for the purpose of obtaining an interview with President Johnson; who, however, at that hour, was in consultation with Secretary Stan- ton, at the conclusion of which Mr. Stephens was granted an audience lasting half an hour —<—<<_———___ THE CHOLERA. The State Department received a large for- eign mail this morning, containing additional intellignce relative to the cholera. The United States Consul at Leghorn, advi- ses the Department under date of September 30th, that the ravages of the cholera, which have for seyeral months created such an alarm throughout Italy and other portions of Europe, as well as in some portions of Asia, have almost entirely abated. There have been no cases within the Leghorn Consular district, Intelligence from the Consul at Gibralter is to the effect that the Cholera is also gradually disappearing there. Since its fitst appeurance at Gibralter 450 persons haye fallen victims to the malady. Several cases have alsoappeared among the shipping in the port, Intelligence from Smyrna as late as the 23d of September, is to the effeet that the cliolera bas entirely disappeared from that city, after carrying off about four thousand of the inhab- itants, Itis now said to be decimating se verab parts of the interior of the country. WHITE HOUSE. This being Cabinet day, the President had rest from the annoyance of pardon and office seekers. The only visitors of distinction were A. H. Stephens, ex-rebel Vice President, and General Butler, both of whom were granted interviews. The Cabinet meeting, which was in session a greater length of time than usual of Iate, was attended by all the members except Secretary Seward, who is yet absent from the city. See VOLUNTEER ARMY REGISTER. The War Department has prepared a register of all volunteer officers who have served in the army since the commencement of the re. bellion. It will be similar to the regular army Tegister, and will contain the name, rank, birthplace, tims of entry into the service and date of discharge, information which will be of great importance to every officer as a matter of reference, and valuable as a historical docu- ment. ee IMPORTANT TO SHIP OWNERS. The U.S. Consul at Leghorn, in an official communication to the State Department, under date of September 30th, represents that there is 4 constant inquiring there for American yes- sels, which are given the preference by parties desirous of chartering, but as they cannot be had, others are taken. Twelye American ships would have beea chartered during the past three months if they could have been obtained. SALE OF GOVERNMENT LOCOMOTIVES.
