Scarcely one of the devoted army escaped. They left 1,500 dead on on the field, and only 300 wounded—a, concin- sive proof of the fearful nature of the struggle. Their leader, Duarte, and 1,200 of his troops fell into the hands of the Braviliaus and all their stores were cnptnred. The allies state their logs at only 250 killed and wounded. Another detachmentof the P.raguayan army, 70 strong, on the opposite side of the river, was prevented by the Bravilian gunboats from reinforcing Duarte, and at the time of ont Inst dates were securely hemmed in at Uraguayana by an im- mensely superior force, As a set off against these snuccesses an engagement is chronicled between the Paraguayan batteries and the Bra- zilian fleet, im which the fleet seems to have been severely handled.
