i a Leacut ix Boston—4 pad ‘or New York.—Seme twen a = bet wees last pine Ae; atthe use of one of their number at the South-end, and after comparing market accounts, came to the deter- Mination to avoid the use of butter with theex- ception of one pound a week for each family, until it could be purchased for thi cents a pound. One gentleman who has Had exten. sive means of learning the condition of the but- ter producing districts said the stocks on hand, of June butter, are fully equal, in themselves, to supply the entire country until another sea. son. te was the most wonderfully prolific opening of a season that had ever been known. But dairy faymers, who had had a taste of bigh prices last year, were unwilling to come down. This, united to the fact that speculators from New York and Boston haye been scouring the country, paying liberally. for the purpose of securmg & monopoly, was the reason of the present high rates, and not scarcity, as was falsely pretended. He said that one firm in this city controlled ee see a It was only necessary for generally to abstain trom using the article, which the; could do by the practice of little self-deni until the price was reduced to thirty cents a pound, and that object could be accomplished ap a short ume. The twenty housekeepers who have tormed this league consume, in the aggregate, one hundred and twenty pounds of butter weekly. This movement, alone, would not affect the market, but if we could have twenty thousand such leagues—there ought to be two hundred thousand housekeepers who are ready to enter such & compact—their influence would soon be felt and butter would find its level.—Boston Courier ee nee See aa tes Baa Come To Lire AGary.—Jobn Redman, a colored man, died (as was supposed) at an early bour on Saturday morning, at his resi- dence, in St. Louis. coffin and a shroud ‘were procured, and the colored corpse, after being washed, shaved and dressed in his burial clothes, was laid out in the coffin. While his bereaved wife was wringing her tears out of a bandanna handkerchief, and numerous friends, «mate with grief,” was sitting around the dead body, talking about whata man he was, Mr. Redman suddenly rai himselfbolt up- right in his coffin, with the majesty of death in bis cold face. Moving his notentirely sightless orbs around upon the company of mourners, his clay lips began to chatter some unintelligi- bie stuff about the other world. The result of this hideous performance was to upset the whole assemblage with sudden horror, the female friends fainting and tumbling into each other's arms at the sight of the ghost; the men themselves caving in, and with dilated eyes rushing hurriedly out of the room. Mrs. Red- man, the distressed widow, was among the number who fainted. When she came too, she ran out of the room and out of the house, and nothing could induce hes to return during the day, notwithsianding she was assured that her husband had come to be conscious, and that the doctor thought he might recover. &7 A private letter received from Constanti- nople states that the conflagration that broke out in that city on the 6th of September de- stroyed about ten thousand tenements, by which upwards of forty thousand people are Jeft without a roof to cover them. 87 The Seventeenth U.S. Infantry is or- dered from Fort Preble, Me.. to New Mexico, 486 486 ' SPRING ASSORTMENT at MARKRITER’S, NO. 486 SEVENTH STREET, DEALER IN CHOICE STOCK or INTERIOR ADORNMENTS, EMBRACING PAPER HANGINGS.
