This regiment has served both in Virginia and North Carolina, doing garrison duty for the past five months at Albemarle Sound. Phis regiment was raised in this District, and when it entered the service numbered over one thou- sand men, but now returns with only 700, 450 of whom were recruited since the regiment has been in the field. The gallantry of the regi- ment has been alluded to in special orders is- sued both by Generals Butler and W.F. Smith, and the men have participated in eleven bat- ues, as follows:—Wilson’s Landing, Bailor’s Farm, Petersburg, (two assaults.) Chapin’s ¥arm, Fort Harrison, Fair Oaks, (October Fort Fisher, (both assaults,) Sugar Loaf, N.C., before Wilmington, and at Cex’s Bridge. In the last campaign the regiment lost 23 of- ficers, and but few of those who went out with the regiment have returned. The present field and staff officers of the regiment are :—Colonel, John H. Holman; Lieutenant Colonel. Giles H. Rich: Major, Henry C. Perkins; Surgeon, J.R. Wiest: Assistant Surgeon, Theodore H. Bell: Adjutant, A. L. Bell: Quartermaster, Syl- vester H. Burchell. The chaplain of the regi- ment is Rev. H. M. Turner, colored, who was well known here as see of Israel Church, just below the Capitol. prepress CrImMe Iv TRE DistRict.—Crime in this District has been fearfully on the increase lately, owing to the number of desperate char- acters afloat here, and tne janl has now a larger number of prisoners in it than it has contained for several years, nearly the entire number be- ing charged with penitentiary offenses. Those now in confinement are perhaps the hardest set of criminals ever collected together, and the Walls of the jail bear marks of these desperate characters; more attempts having been made toescape during the past few months than ever before in the same period. Warden Brown having taken the neeessary measures, has, however, succeeded in preventing any further attempts, and doubtless he will be able to keep those now in bis custody eafe until their cases are disposed of judicially. Yesterday there were confined in the walls of the jail 249 prisoners, (45 women.) of whom 196 aré awaiting trial for offences, the punish- ment of which is confinement in the peniten- tary. There are7 charged with murder, 124 grand larceny, 16 burgl: + 11 highway rob- bery, 19 horse stealing, 4 pick pocket, 1 each for traud. forgery, swindling, passing counterfeit Money, and isoning;S assault and battery Snd intent to kill, 2 rape, 9 assault and battery, 7 bawdy house, 2 awaiting requisition, 5 sell- ing liquor w soldiers, Jin default of security to keep the peace. This summary does not embrace all who are ‘waiting trial by the court. Probably fifty per cent. of those arrested for various crimes being under security for their Sppearance at court, and numbers of those in the classification above Test under more than one charge, one only be- ing counted, Already at this term of the court 13 have been sentenced to the penitentiary, and should the usual proportion be found guilty,a much larger number will be sent to the peni- tentiary this term of the court than ever before 2 one term. ee OrrHays’ Court, Judge Purcell—On Sat- urday the will of the late Louisa T. The lines from here are doing very well, large numbers going over at every de ure, and the line via Aquia Creek has regained the popularity it enjoyed before the war, carrying the bulk of the pas. sengers to Richmond; while the Orange and Alexandria road is doing quite a business ta- sung the bulk of the Lynchburg trade. subemneaiaenenaee Tue Matex Game or Cricket.—The match game of cricket, between the Washington Club of this city and the Monumental Club of Balti- more, came off on Saturday last, at the play rounds of the Monumental Club, in the south- western section of that city.
