: j Sa ee a EVENING STAR, | AUCTION SALES. The Davenport Brothers in Paris. From a Paris letter of Sept. 15.} The venport Brothers appeared for the first and probably the last time in Paris yes- terday evening. They had taken up the pre- caution to print upon the tickets (price twen- ty-five francs each) a notice that the spectators Toust implicitly obey the instructions of the in- | terpreter. Notwithstanding the price charged the room was filled; but already befure the com- mencement of the performance there were symptoms that things would not pass so quietly &s iu the private abode of the adepts. M. Robin had, the evening before, given an exhibition very closely resembling the spiritual manifes- tations of which the por fratrum are the me- dtoms; so that the audience was not only criti- cal, but well upin the subject. Some dela: occurred mm commencing the ‘formance. meagre band of musicians ¢1 vored in vain to fill,it up with —_ at a waltz, which the impatience of the public would not permit them to finish. At last a white-cravatted, blue- coated, gilt-buttoned individual, with gloves irreproachably clean, appeared upon the stage. He explained in somewhat dreamy language that the brothers made no pretensions to supernatural powers, that they were mere passive agents of spiritua] manifestations, which they pretend to explain. They do not ask for faith; the: address themselves to science, to which y present certain pheno- mena, facts which science and the press may discuss, The speech was a long one, the au- dience got tired and called out for “the experi- ments,” “the two brothers,’, and some wicked | wag added, Les Dexz Seurs. They came for- ward at iJast, looking worn and rather frightened. The interpreter then invited two of the audience to come upon the stage to watch the operation. The two who stepped forward were greeted with howls of “Confreres /”” but these changed to applause when the: named themselves. M. . de Pene, weil known for a celebrated duel, and editor of the Gazettes des Elrangers, and the Vicomte Lew They inspected cords and cupboard, saw noth- ing suspicions, and the brothers were as se- curely as usual tied to their bench. The doors are closed, the unearthly hubbub of unmusical instruments commences; the spectators ask for hight, the spirits by their mterpreter object; the public is for a moment silent, and the brothers walk outof their box unbound. One of the gentlemen who tied them thinks the ropes pro- euced are not the same as he had used, but the objection does not prevent the second manifea- tation. This time the brothers, who had en- tered the box unbound, are found solidly at- tached to the bench; but a spectator, whose at- tention had been uninterruptedly fixed on the bench, jamps on the stage, puts his hand on the bench round which the cords are wound, touches @ spring, the bench bends in the mid- die: and the cords fall at the feet of the cap- tives, who themselves plunged down—not on their heads. The rush, the row, were terrific; but the appearance of the Commissary of Po- lice, who announced that the money would be returned, succeeded in restoring quiet. The company, after examining the mysteries of the cupboard, retired, not sorry to find their mone: in their pockets, delighted at having detect the imposture and glad to breathe some fresh air, for the heat bad been stifling. Let us hope that this is the last we shall hear of this gross imposture. The believers in spiritualism will probably — in their superstition, and even the case of the brothers may be less desperate than it would seem to unbiassed observers. Who knows that their discomfiture was not a trick of the spirits? S7 Lynchburg letters state that the growing crop of tobacco in Virginia 1s almost too insig- nificant to be worth mentioning. Durimg the war the cultivation of this staple was almost entirely abandoned, and is not likely to be re- sumed to any considerable extent. here is a considerable activity in the market at present. Large quantities of tobacco which have been held over for two or three years are daily ar- riving. ee eee Rrat_EstatTs.—On Wednesday, 27th inst., Daniel Clarke, Esq., Trustee for the sale of the real estate of John F.
