From the notice before us we quote the following inci- dents in the life of Mr. Force : «When the second edition of Knickerbocke1's History of New York was printed, young Force was foreman of the office where the work was done. One morning, while reading a lot of proofs before sending them to Mr. Irving, he came to the listof old Dutch names, and, by way of a joke, he added some halt-dozen other authentic names, that the author had probab! forgotten or never heard of, and the proofs ‘were returned to the office by Mr. Irving with these words: ‘Wery good, let them goin,’ and they have all dawg retained in the subsequent editions of the work. in 1815 Mr. Force moved to the city of Wash- ington, with whose ner aR and history he has ever since been identified. In 1536 Mr Force published, in four volumes, & series of “Tracts and other Papers,” relating to the erigin, settlement and progress of the North American colouies. But the great work with which he is identi fied is the publication known as “ American Archives: A Documentary History of the Eng- lish Colonies in North America,” from 1774 to the declaration of independence. The idea originated with him, was compiled by him, and published by him in conjunction with Mat- thew St. Clair Clarke, under the authority of Congress and at the expense of the General Government. The act of Congress was passed in 1533, and the first volume of the work, which is a large folio, was printed in 1537; and, up to the present time, nine volumes have beer pub- lished, at a cost of $20,000 per volume, or 150,000 for the set thus far completed. In the rosecution of his labors, the compiler began i making a pmo examination of the pub- lic archives in the thirteen original States of the Union; and, m carrying ont this great de- sign, he has spared nO pains, nor research, nor money in obtaming such printed and original documents, and such correspondence, as to form perfectly consecutive history of the vital period in our national life.” When completed the archives will make twenty volumes, nine of which only have ap- peare Mr. Force has a library of 50,000 volumes, and the most complete collection of American history in the country. This accumulation of books commenced more than fifty years since. Case or Garnor —On Saturday night about if o'clock as Mr. Rudolph Buchly, fur- niture dealer on 7th street, was on his way home on 6th street, between G and H, be was attacked near his house by three men, one of whom caught him round the neck while the other two reliever him of his wallet, contain- ing about - ar . valuable papers. Mr. Buch- ly afterwards se w the three men going down 7th street and informed officers Taylor, Peaster, and Clements, who arrested them, one of them, Ballenger, drawing a large bowie knife and making some show of resistance. They were taken to the 4th Ward station where they gave their names as John Ballenger, E. Carroll and John Smith alias Williams. Yesterday morn- ing they were before Justice Walter, who com- mitted them to jail for a further hearing. Mr. Bochly has identified Carroll asa young man uamed Bryan Carroll, formerly in his employ, and who had thus become acquainted with bis habits and the position in a vest pocket in which he was in the habit of carrying his money. Smith was just out of jail on a charge of horse stealing, and Ballenger’s mug graces the Thieves Gallery at the station house, we believe. The party threw away a package of papers, stolen from Mr. Buchly, ix n thelr fight, but the money has not been recovered. Onrnans’ Court, Judge Purcell_—On Sat- urday the will of Peter McDonongh, bequeath. ing bis estate to his wife, was fled. The will of Samuel F. McKenney, of George- town, was fully proved and admittea to pro- bate, and letters testamentary were issued to Charles H. Craigen. In the case of Caroline Reedeger, executrix of Jerome Reedeger, counter security was given. Letters of administration were issued to El- amplin on estate of Joseph Sanders; Rogers on estateof Charity McCoy; to Frederick Seitz on estate of Adam Smith. Eliza R. Rhodes was appointed guardian to the orphans of Edward Rhodes. The first and final account, with balance and distribution of Walter Scott, executor of Chas. M. Williams. and of Susan W.
