The woman died about § o’clock Saturday even- ing, and he had severely beat her about an hour before and choked her. Martin has frequently assaulted nis wife, and during last ‘week was before the police several times. On ‘Wednesday night he was arrested for beating his wife, and Justice Boswell fined him $10.9), when he went off. On the following night he ‘Was brought up before Justice Boswell on the same charge, and gave bail to keep the peace, wand several hours after he was brought up again tor being drunk and disorderly, but be- ing sober in the morning and premising to get a physician to see bis wife, he was dismissed. Officer Barker, after taking him in custody, locked the house up and toox him to the sta- tion, where the case was heard yesterday Morning by Justice Handy. (One of the neigh- bors, Mrs. Knott, testified to having heard them repeatedly quarrelling and he beating her. She heard him swear that he would kill her, and heard her fall off the bed. Patsy Martin, a child of the accused, testi- fied that he saw his father chase his mother under the bed and pull her out, when he stamped ana kicked her, and on Saturday be- tore she died he saw his father take hold of and choke her. Justice Handy committed him to jail for court. Yesterday afternoon Coroner Woodward held an inquest on the body at the residence, when there was consideravle evidence offered going to show that Martin beat and kicked her most unmercifully, sometimes choking her, and thathe, instead of being & kind father to Ris chiidren, used them roughly. It was also testified that he had become jesious of her on account of a soldier, and he had previously threatened that he would not work until he had killed her. A st mortem examination was held by Drs. Richard Croggon and G. K. Smith and C. H. Bowen, (the two latter of Armory Square Hospital,) which fully sustained the evidence As far as the beating was concerned. It was also ascertained that the deceased was preg- nant, and the opinion was expressed that her immediate death was caused by bis stamping on her. ‘The jury returned a verdict that the deceased ‘came to her death by reason of violent assaults upon her person by her husband, John Mar- tin, and that she died at > o’clock on the nignt of June 241th. ee Potice Rerorts—Second Precinct.—Joshua Anderson, drunk and disorderiy; $5.40.
