CanaL.—The only arrivals registered ara the boat Haldeman and scow Camp, with wood, piles and stayes, President Spates, who has been to the breach which now dejays arrivals, reports that it is probable that the way will be opened by hursday. No doubt the fleet of boats await. ing the letting in of the water is very large, as the breach in the Antietam division delayed a number, and to this will be added all delayed by this last breach, about twelve miles above. NEGLECT TO ATTEND —Yesterday, the cuard from the station atthe signal corps north of town brought a negro man named Charies H. Bias to the police station and left him in cas. tody of the officers, stating that the prisoner ‘was arrested for trespassing or Mrs. Barbour’s farm, and that Mr. John Barbour wonid ap. pear against him this morning. The prisoner was confined, and when the Jnstice proceeded to try the cases at the hour prescribed by law, he found Bias among tue prisoners, but no one appeared against bim. The Justice detained the prisoner until 11 o'clock to await the arri. yal of the complainant, and no oneappearing, the prisoner was discharged. Ati o’clock Mr. Barbour appeared, and when told that tie prisoner was discharged, there being 0 case against him, Mr. Barbour exhibited some an. ger, and rough language ensued between him and the Justice, and he then told the Justice that the fellow had attempted to commita rape on a white lady. Te Justice then remarzed that in a case of so much importance, the com. plainant should have stated the charge dis. tinctly and have appeored promptly at the hour for trial. The prisoner has not been ar- rested since the charge was made known. It is not the first instance in which criminals have escaped justice 12 4 the failure of the com- plainant to make the charge correctly. SS Ey [2708 LETTERS REMAININGIN THE PosT 3. aie LARCENY CASES.—On Saturday afternoon, Thos. Wheims was arrested by Officer Crown, of the 2d precinct, for stealing @ pair of boots from Wm. Saks. Wheims was sent to jail for court by Justice Walter. Wheims is & soldior. Joseph Hoff, a soldier, was arrested by Of- ficer Drain for the larceny of a horse. The evidence was Rot sufficient to sustain the charge, and thecase was dismissed by Jus- tice Drury. Officer Muter, of the Second Ward, arrested John Claney, N. Brough and E. W. Day for the larceny of a mule trom Lieut S.H. Hurd, quartermaster of General Slocum’s division. It appeared in evidence that Olancy sold the mule to Day, but there being no evidence to prove @ guilty knowledge thatthe mule was stolen, he was dismissed by Superintendent Richards. The evidence affording grounds tor suspicion that Clancy and Brough were concerned in the larceny, they were lield for further hearing. THE OPENING OF THE NEW Ling.—The new line from this city to Richmond direct, was opened this morning at 7 o’clock, the steamer Keyport, of Captain Mattingly’s line, taking down a number of passengers. For the pres- ent, until the railroad from the Potomac to Fredericksburg is placed inrunning order, the passengers will be landed at Belle Plain where they take stages to Fredericksburg and from thence go to Richmond by rail, reaching that place by four in the afternoon, thus saving about nine hours over any other line and doing‘ all their travel in broad daylight. Tickete are now soldat the Camden Station, Baltimore, over this route, and passengers on their arrival here take the city railway, with which an ar- rangement has been made, and are carried di- Tect tothe whart. For the present the Key- port leaves at 7 o'clock daily, but assoon as the railroad is in order another boat will be added and two trips be made per day. See DEDICATION. — On Sunday next the new Catholic Church of the Immaculate Concep- tion, on the corner of Eighth and N streets, will be dedicatea. The Rev. Archbisho; Spaulding, of Baltimore, is expected to of- ficiate on the occasion.
