Pusiic SCHOOL ExaMINaTions,—The ex- mination of the public schools were continued yesterday atternoon, as follows: Primary No 1, (female) First District, Miss Amelia Hubbard, teacher, numbers forty-six Little girls, and may be called a branch of Miss Obinson’s primary No. 2. as all scholars re- ceiving tickets of admission to Miss Robinson’s school, who have never received any teaching, are placed in charge of Miss Hubbard until sufficiently advanced to be transterred to pri- mary No 2. This schcol (primary No. 1) is taught by whatis termed the “object system,” Which consists of placing ebjects before the scholars upon which questions are asked and illustrated. This system was introduced here by Miss Hubbard, who is from Oswego, N. Y., potion og itbas been practiced with great suc- The various classes of this school were sub- jected to a very close examination by Messrs. ilson and Richards, but the scholars acquit- ted themselves wellin all the branches they bad studied. The room in which this school is held is a darge airy one, on the corner of 19th street and Pennsylvania &venne, but unfortunately there are other schools in the room, which partly in- terferes with the studies of her own scholars, from tbe confusion created by classes of both schools me+ting at the same time. Primary No.7, Second District, Miss Tilley teacher.—This school is for boys, and is located | On “th street west, near P street, in the same building as Primary No. °,examined on Thurs- day, and mentioned in the Star of yesterday. ‘The scholars number sixty, fifty-one of whom Were present at the examination, seven being Absent on account of sickness. The school was examined by Mr. Wight in reading, writing And other simple exercises, with very satis- factory results. The children all manifested interest ir their studies, and since the orgeni- wzation of the schoo', about two months since, bave made encouraging progress. Primary No 6, Third District, of which Miss Somphronia Lusby is teacher, was examined yesterday afternoon by Dr. F. S. Waish, in Teading, spelling and arithmetic, in which they Acquitted themselyes very creditably. The School has on its rolls the names of sixty boys, Only two of whom were absent, one on account of sickness. This school is taught on the lower floor of the building at the corner of 7th and G Streets, (Navy Yaro,) and was formerly in eharge of Miss Triplett. Miss Lusby is one of the new teachers, having assumed charge in February last, and her examination proved that she possesses the reqnisites of a good teacher. Sne has apparently paid impartial Attention to the three classes. The order was good. It was cheering to the examining trustee, the teacher, and the scholars, that quite a number of visitors were present—a fact we A Goop Orrorgtcnzrr To Bur A HOUSE — The attention of those desiring to purehase is dir: cted to the advertisement of a three-story brick dwelling house, No. 565 H street north, near Fifth, to be sold by McGruire & Oo., Mon- day afternoon. This property is situated in one of the most rapidly improviug portions of the city, is conveiient to two markets, and af- fords an excellent opportunity for investment, or for persons of moderate means to secure a Medium-sized house at a cheap rate. ——_—._— DRownNED,—Last evening & little boy about 10 years of age, sonof Mr. Minnekiem, baker, ff Virginia avenne, between 5th and 6th streets, went with some companions to Blag- den’s wharf to bathe, and was drewned. The bedy was speedily secured by a sailor and efforts were made to resuscitate it, but without any success. The coroner was notified tehold an inquest. OITY ITEMS. ALL the most desirable styles of Straw Hats may be found at Geo C. Henning’s. corner7th ryeny ‘ind Maryland avenue. Call and see em. P#ARL Comre, hair chains, seai chains, stoae rings and sets, tea spoons, call bells, for only would like io notice at all examinations. Primary School No. 3, Fourth District, Miss Alice Adams, teacher, was examined yester- day by Mr. J. E. Holmead, assisted by Mr. John E. Thompson. This school-house is on 12th street, south of Maryland avenue, and is ous of the new small frame stractures built by the Corporation for schools of this class. It is rather a favorab!e specimen of this style of Structure, being well ventilated and cheerfal in sppearance. Yesterday, the walls were decorated with evergreeps, and upon the walls appeared a likeness of the late lamented Pres- ident. We believe every school-room in the District has a similar likeness of Mr. Lincoln. ‘We are glad to say that there was a goodly at- tendance of parents and others. Of the sixty names on the roll there were fifty-six present, four being sick. There are from seventy-five to one hundred applicants for seats. Miss Adams’ scsool ranks well amongst the prima- ries of the city, and sustained its repu'ation amply yesterday: the examining trustee at th close expressing his entire satisfaction wit the progress made. i Se CEntTER MARK2T, To-DAy.—Reef, best cuts, er pound, ‘We.; next, 5c. See PE Metrnovs ConpuctT.—Day before yesterday Qn outbreak occurred at Anandale, Fairfax county, Va., about seven miles from the Long Bridge, amobg the cavalry, which tor a short time threatened to become very serious. The 6th and 19th N. Y. cavalry regiments had been consolidated into one, called the 2d N.Y. Pro- visional Regiment. The sth numbered about 700 men, and had participated in all the cam- paigns of the cavairy corps, winning an env able reputation for gallantry and efficiency. ‘The 19th numbered 1,100 men, but had not seen much service, and in consideration of the ser- vices and experience of the 6th about two- thirds of the officers of the new provisional regiment were appointed from among them. This enraged the men of the 19th, who claimed that their mumber should entitle them to at Jeast one-half of the officers, and on Thursday night they fired into the camp of theéth and rallied for a big fight. The firing was returned briskly, but the cavalry baving been deprived ot ammunition, in anticipation of trouble in consolidating the regiments, quiet was soon restored, with but few casualties. —_—_»———_ To we McsTerep Uvt.—The 93d New York regiment.
