Messrs . J.T. Parker, J. W. Drane, J. B. Conway, ot the pettit jury, were excused, and the jary dis- charged until ten o’clock to-day. In charging the Grand Jury, Judge Wylie Tully advised them of their duties and respon- Sibilities. He called their attention to the tact that they heard butone side of the cases brought before them. and should, therefore, be cautious in making up their decisions, for it oftentimes happens thata case appears perfectly fair to the Grand Jury, but when both sides are heard elsewhere the charge amounts to nothing. Judge W. 8lso said he was anxious to caution the jurors against one evil which had sprang up in this District, and that was regarding the practice of grand jurors themselves sending Out intothe community and collecting infor- mation with regard to supposed offences or crimes—calling in witnesses who they may Suppose may Know something in regard toa particniar case. The practice was all wrong, and grand jurors bad no right todoit. If they had any knowledge as jurors of a nuisance, or a@uy Offence committed which would be pun- ishable by law, they coulda present the ease of their own knowledge, without examining wit- messes on the subject. As a jury, they might 0 in.o any partof the District and examine into the existence of alleged offences; and if ahey are satisfied such exist and are punish- able by law, then of their own motion, and without witnesses, they could present the of- dence and the party guilty of it. The Judge also cautioned the jarors against following their feelings to influence them, bither for or against any one indicted or pre- Sented before them. He said there had been brought to his notice @ertain alleged public nuisances, known as giftjewelry establishments, and recommended ammediate attention to the subject. Judge Wylie concluded the charge by giving the jurors some general instructions, atter ‘which they were discharged, and the Court adjourned until this morning. geen IncEnDIARY ATTeMrT —The alarm of fire given trom box 21, about3 o'clock a. m., cor- mer ef Fourth street and Massachusetts ave- hue, Was caused by an attempt to destroy the house coruer of Fifth and K streets north, oc- cupied by Mr. George Bradley as a grocery store and dwelling The incendiary broke a plank from the enclosure of the back yard, and gained accees to a window in the first story, ahrough which be entered the bouse.
