Difficulties Between Sheridan and War- ren. From the New York Commercial.) welgive elsewhere condensed reports of Generals Mesde and Sheridan as to the oretd borne by them im the grand campaign which cloned | ‘The heroes of Gettysburg and Five Forks write as they fight, going at their task in a straightforward, business-like man— ner. Unassuming aud generous as they ard skillful and brave, they do not aim to give prominence to theirown individual merits, bus award credit to their subordinates wherever it was due. When the movement commenced from near Petersburg, Meade’s personal command cen= sisted of the 2d corps (Humphreya’) Sth (War- Ten’s), 6th (Wright's), and th ( 's), Gen= eral Grant exercising @ personal supervision over the entire army, empracing, in additiow to those enumerated, portions o: the 23d and. and 2ith corps and tRe cavalry. After Sheri- dan’s advance and attack upon Five Forks the 5th corps was sent to him, and remained subject to his command during the remainder of the campaign. When the impetuous on- slaughts of the cavalry, supported by the 5th corps infantry, had so diverted the enemy's attention as to weaken their Jeft and center in. front of Petersburg, Meade, who had remained back with his three corps, suddenly, on the morning of April 2, hurled them upon the weakened lines, which they broke throngh im every direction. General Wright inaugurated this movement at four o’clock, and to his corps General Meade ascribes the credit of its entre success. He says: “The gzllant assauiton the 2d instant by the sth corps was, in my judg- ment, the decisive movementof the campaign.” He again praises this command for their sub- sequent successful attack at Sailor's Cree. and also speaks in the highest terms of his re- maining corps, and of the ‘‘chearfalness with which all submitted to fatigue and privations to secure the coveted prize.” Gen. Sheridan's effective force of cavalry numbered nine thousand. On the 29th of March he left his encampment near Peters— burg, to make, as he says,a cavalry raid om the Southside railroad, and thenge join Gen. Sherman, or return to Petersburg, as circam< stances might dictate. After he had proceeded well on the expedition, he, however, received, during the night, instractions from Gen. Grant to abandon it, and, acting tn concert with the intantry supporting him—Warren’s 5th corps— turn the right of Lee’sarmy. He accordingly, at an early hour on the following morning, di- rected his course for the Five Forks, the pos- session of which he knew would effectually turn theenemy’s works. Thereaderis already familiar with the brilliant success of his move- ment: how, after a desperate conflict, he cap= tured and dispersed the whole force confront= ing him, and compelled the enemy to send & heavy force from their Petersburg line of works in order to stay his victorious progress. While the engagement was guing on, he re- lieved Gen. Warren from the command of the 5th corps, and directed its movements himself, until Gen. Griffin was eabeeguonay assigned to it. Some dayssince Gen. Warren published a letter, in which he stated that he had been unable to ascertain why he was thus peremp- torily relieved. Sheridan assigns the cause in. his report. As we have hitherto learned trom another official source, (gen, Grant was fear= ful lest Warren might not be up to time, and. he accordingly, 8s Sheridan says, “ unsolicited by himeelf,” clothed him with authority to re= move Warren should he deem it best to do s0- He adds: “Gen. Warren did not exert himeeif to get up his corps as rapidly as he might have done. and his manner gave me the impression. that be wished the sun to go down before dis~ positions for the attack could be completed.’” Again, he says he was dissatisfied with him during the engagement, adding: « Portions of his line gave way when notexpused to aheavy fire, andsimply tor want of confidence on the part of the troops, which Gen. Warren did not exert himself to inspire. I therefore re- lieved him.” ‘The reason for this misunderstanding was ebvious. Warren was the personal friend and cempanion of Meade, the commander nomi- nally of the whole army, and did not relism being subordinated to Sheridan, who had just joined that army. Sheridan’s report, furthermore, shows thaG this iU feeling did not stop with Warren, and corroborates & dispatch to the Commercial while the pursuit was in progress, which affirmed that there was considerable jealousy among the subordinate commanders. Sheridan says after the battle of Sailor’s Creek : “Major McClellan and Lieutenant Colonek Franklin, of General Wright's staff, had suc cessively been sent forward to report the gress of the 6th corps in coming up, and om the arrival of Major General Wright he re- ported his corps to me, and from that time un= til after the batte received my orders and obeyed them; but after the engagement was over, and General Meade had communicated with General Wright, the latter declined to make his reportto me until ordered to do so by the Lieutenant General.” Happily for the country, however, Generals Meade and Wright did not permit their feelings to interfere with their duty, and all working together, the pursuit was brought to a glorieus termination. We have thus dwelt at some length on these reports, clearing up certain points, as they do, in the Jast campaign of the war, which will hereafter be regarded and looked back to with more interest than any other. is kK n d f, in Financial. Itis said thata disturbance was created in the store ef Mr. Shields by George G. Parsons, a soldier in Smith’s Independent Cavalry; that he was ejected therefrom in consequence of his be- havior, and this, 1t seems, excited him very mnuch;then he went to camp, and returned to Salisbury shortly afterward with several sol- diers to help him avenge the insult. They proceeded to the hotel of Mr. Byrd. and found im on the front porch. Supposing that he had. aided injejecting him from Shield’s store, Par= sons fired his revolver at the deceased, striking him once in the wrist, once through the body, and once after he had fallen..
