TELEGRAPHIO NEWS. so FROM NOE TH CAROLINA. ws frem Geldsberough—An- " Bate ote ef Grant's Great Victery— Display Loyalty in Raleigh and New- bern, etc. GotpsnorouGH, April 6.—The capture of Richmond and the great victory of Grant was telegraphed here this morning from Newbern. ‘The joy snd enthusiasm in Sherman’s ar- my was beyond description. The Union citizens at Raleigh also cele- brated the event in spite of the rebels, who are now powerless to prevent such loyalman- ifestations of joy, which refugees say are open- ly being displayed at different points o1 the State. = Here, at Newbern and other pase in the Department, bells were rang and guns fired. Carl Schurz has just arrived at Newbern, and it is rumored is on his way to Raleigh. No movement for the return of North Uaro- lina to the Union will probably be made until Raleigh is occupied by our forces, though it is the general desire of the people throughout the State s A portion of General Sherman’s army was under orders to move, prior to the reception of the news that Richmond was captured. ___ FROM CITY POINT. FROM THE ——— DESTRUCTION OF TOBACCO LYNCHBURG ae aay Y= We hase the Richmond Whig of yesterday from which we take the following of interest: «We learn that Gen. Robert E. Lee arrived in the city last night. Gens. Rosser and Fitzbugh Lee refused to abide by the terms of surrender it is said, and made their escape, unattended, to “parts un- known.” The number of men surrendered by Gen. Lee is stated at 25,000, of whom only 5,000 had muskets. The rest had thrown away their anne during the forced marches into the inte- rior. Gen. Thomas’ cavalry has occupied Lynch- burg. On Wednesday, the tobacco, public stores and a number of buildings were de- etroyed by order of the military authorities. PERSONAL.—We have had the pleasure ofan interview, at our office, with Rey. Dr B. H. Nadal, of Washington, D. ©., one of the edi- tors of the New York Methodist; and Rev Dr. 8S. B. Rooney, formerly of New York. These ministers areable and zealousmembers of the «Christian Commission.’ They and their as- sociates have devoted themselves to the hu- mane undertakingof alleviating the great dis- tress and destitution prevailing in this city. Fase RepPorts.—We again advise our citt- zens to discontinue the practice of circulaiing rumors which are set afloat by persons inter- ested in the success of the Southern arms. They are the progeny cf an overwrought im- agination, and constitute the food upon which the secession element expects to feed so Jong as the war lasts. Give no heed te them. The Hotels to be re-openec immediately are the Ballard, and perhaps the Exchange. the Powhatan, and St. Charles. Their accommoda- tions will all be needed. StoLten Goops —There are hundreds of thousands of dollars worth of goods stored away in the houses of various persons, which is the rightful property of many worthy suf- ferers by the late fire. These goods were ree- cued from the fire by persons who seem to be possessed of the idea that all such property saved is lecitimate plunder, and that the form- er owners have nomore right toit. Thisis al- together wrcng, and we would direct the at- tention of all holding others’ property to the order of the military authorities respecting suck property, aud the disposition to be made ofit, to the end thatthey may be saved trou. bie and annoyance. The hum oftradeie again heard where so recently nothing was audible but the occasional rumble of a Confederate wagon and the slow clanking of hammers onthose ab- surd iretitutions, Mr. Mallory’s iron-clads. Steamers and schooners line the wharves, and wagons, drays and vans rush toand fro with all the eager enterprise of Broadway. Another equally striking change is being rapidly worked. The mud and filth and grass of four yeara had accumulated on the pavements and sidewalks, ranging in depth from six inches to two feet. By order of the military authorities, upwards of@ thousand colored laborers are employed inthe thorough cleansing of the streets and wharves, and already the work has made great progress. If this system is per- severed in, as judging from the action of. the United States authorities in New Orleans we have no doubt it will be, during the comlog summer Richmond will be healthier than at aay former pericd. & NATIONAL SALUTE of two hundred guns was fired yesterday afternoon on the Square, by directions of a general order of the Secre- tary of War. The firing was by company D, 4th battery, United States Regulars, Captain Folet, and was in honor of the official an- nouncement of the surrender of Gen. Lee aud the Army of Northern Virginia. Tne Gas.—Fifty barrels of lime were re- ceived in the city yesterday, tobe used in the purification of the gas at the gas works. The gas was turned on lastnight, and we hope now tohave a continuous eupply. Their graves sre generally marked, and friends from the North who desire to disinter the bodies can do sa without difficulty and Dave them sent North.” The Whig says editorially: The duty of alltrae Virginians is pertectly apparent. Whatever may have been their pre- vious views and wishes, they will now step forth and acknowledge at ounce the anthority of the United States Government, andthatthey owe full allegiance to it. The slightest hesita- Uon in regard to this matter can bat still far- ther complicate the difficulty of the situation, 8nd throw additional obstacles in the way of a speedy return to that quietude and freedom from restraint that is essential toenable the people to recoWer from the blighting etfect this unbappy war has had on every interest in this State. The course of the authorities and of the soldiery in this cityis well calculated toin- epire confidence in their desire to see harmony Aud fraternal feeling restored in our common country; and we feel confident thatour people, in every section of the State, will freely re- spond, aud do in all their power to bring about a@consummation which will be fraught with so much of happiness and good.
